Bummer dude. You can rule out your houseguest as an accomplice? I'd visit the local pawnshops asap.
Good reminder to at least take photos of your stuff.
Just what I was thinking.
Op, not to accuse the person that was staying there but too often it is someone close to you who is involved. Maybe not your house guest but someone who knows them.
So some random person who just happened to drive by and luckily hit just when that person was gone from the house? I have seen it many times and just dont buy it.
Edit for the heck of it: this is why I mention it:
We were just married, bil and his buddy stop over at my house and I got some money from the kitchen cupboard. Probably only had a couple hundred dollars stashed there. We all left and went to bil apartment. His buddy left early. By the time we got home door had been kicked in and the rest of the money from under that plate in that cupboard was gone. Please!
I used to drive a certain road on my way to work and see police tape all around one house on my way home. On the news that night they said the home owner, his wife and his parents had all been bludgeoned in their sleep. In the end it ended up being a grandsons crack head friend who had visited the house with the grandson. Grandson had boasted of how gramps kept large sums of money on hand.
Last house we sold 3 years ago Detroit suburbs. Neighbor behind me comes over and asks if I had seen anyone around that day. I said no we just got home from work. He had been broke into and tv's computers taken during an hour window while wife took daughter down the street to dance lesson. New dirt bags had moved in across the street and didn't work. They had all day to watch who was coming and going from his house.
When we used our current house as a summer place we kept noticing large amounts of plants disappearing from our yard. We had an extra vehicle stored there. Neighbor was constantly wanting to chit chat about how long we were staying etc. Wife decided to stay for a week by herself so I headed home on a Sunday afternoon. A couple hours later wife calls me and said she must have surprised 2 neighbor women who were at the edge of our property with a shovel in hand when my wife stepped out the door. They dropped the shovel and turned around and split. Security cameras all over now.
Sorry to seem cynical to some folks but as they say, the world is very small in some ways. This often times isn't some crime syndicate from the Detroit ghetto that drove 250 miles past some random house in the woods and just happens to pop in and start digging up thousands of dollars worth of plants. It's the freaking people next door who you had kept their driveway mowed etc because they didn't have a tractor. I know where I'd place my bet.
