Home burglarized while I was camping

I was burglarized while off camping for a week. While enjoying the beautiful beaches of the Florida panhandle I was hit. The Tv's and stuff like that are easy enough to replace but the heirloom jewelry and antique .38 special police service revolver of my grandfather were priceless to me. There was someone staying at my house during the time but had went out on an errand for less than an hour. I had no photos of the jewelry so little chance any will be recovered but the serial number of the gun is in the hands of the police. Hopefully it will turn up. Just a reminder to all to document your belongings if they're irreplaceable. The police were thorough in collecting evidence so they may be identified at some point. Loss will be close to $9k.

True enough but when you see someone in the pics and even though they may be a little fuzzy you see the shape of the big belly and green garden shoes you know it's the next door neighbor not some criminal from a city 250 miles away. Just a simple trail cam is priceless entertainment if nothing else. ๐Ÿ™‚

I was doubtful of picture quality at times but even in fuzzy pic there is no mistaking people who you see somewhat often. It's not just about straight on direct facial images. If the op had just about any trail cam stuck in a bush he could at least verify the time frame of the guest. From there he may be able to say that it is the guy next door etc. Sorry to mention the guest again but.......:)

Why don't they go arrest the next door neighbor? You are so certain that is who done it. :@ Maybe it you who "sucks" instead of everyone else.

Learn to read. Maybe you dont like people with cameras who catch people like you. ๐Ÿ™‚ I also suppose in your mind, if I hadn't grown all the nice plants the neighbor wouldn't have had reason to steal them. Brilliant.

Edit: I did go back and read some of your posts. I see that you are basically a hit and run troll and see that others have also experienced you. You're not here with the intention of helping people. It's also interesting that after making a snaky comment to someone early on you remarked that you probably wouldn't last long around here. We'll keep an eye out for you. Carry on.

Good thoughts for a happy ending.

The picture ideally has to be good enough to clearly show WHO it is and WHAT they did, clear enough for a jury to look at it and say "Yes, that is the defendant".

In reality, it only has to be clear enough for a police officer to show the suspect the video and say "See, we have you" and for the suspect to say something admitting it's them. That happens far more often than anything else - and usually with video that would not convince a jury. The right to remain silent...

I had a case internal to a company where someone was vandalizing a speaker mounted about 20' up. It was happening frequently, right after it would be fixed it would happen again. I specified two cameras, one pointing at the speaker, and another covering a much wider area. I was asked why I wanted to spend the extra for a second camera.

Given that it was 20' up, I knew he had friends steadying the ladder.

When it happened again, we had his face and him damaging the speaker. We called everyone into a room, showed the video, and fired him. All of his buddies laughed as he was escorted out.

We then showed the video from the other camera, and indicated that the next time it happened everyone holding the ladder in that video would be fired.

It never happened again. The guys in the second video persuaded anyone else thinking of doing so not to carry out the idea.

Cameras have their place.

Probably safer to not have any house sitters. I guess it's a feel-good thing, but you're likely just fine leaving the house empty.

Some security ideas.
Phones; If you have wireline phoens Call forward (1st ring) to your cell.
Lights, Randomized timers, also the Television or a radio
Doorbell www.ring.com or just ring.com not sure which.
And of course you can find many companies in the yellow pages selling security alarm systems.

But most important: A good insurance policy.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

Sorry to hear this, but yes ... regardless of your feelings, you can't trust family either.

You got that right, my wife's sister watched our house for us few years ago when we went on vacation. Kind of like having the fox watch the henhouse. When we got back my wife noticed all kinds of things missing, jewelry, CDs and DVDs shoes, clothes etc. My wife discovered many of her stolen items in her sisters apartment. She of course denied it saying she got those items from Goodwill and other Charity stores.

So we changed all the locks on the house the next time we went away and had someone else watch the house for us. We also installed Security Cameras and a DVR system. When we got back home my wife gets a call from her sister asking her if we had changed the locks. So we knew she had came back and had tried to get into the house while we were gone.

i post signs clearly visible concerning my security system. I don't think my residence looks like one that says the signs are BS.

The system also has a zone for the sump pump over filling and a hi/lo heat sensor.

I have had sorry dealings with two "house sitters" but did not get ripped off in the process.

But I did have an inside job rip off once but cannot prove chit.

yeah what a bummer.

The task force officer called back and told me he was certain he had recovered some of the jewelry after I provided a detailed list with some sketches and some other high value items of mine. Meeting them this afternoon to ID some of it.

I'd get some "Beware Of Dog" signs around your fences and invest in an alarm and security cameras. We installed the 8 camera Lorex system from Costco. It's pretty cool, you can view your cameras from the road and even set it up to email you pictures when it detects movement.

The goal is, when a thief looks at your house to make him think other houses are way less of a risk to break into. Sorry this happened!
