Knee revision

My 12 year old total knee replacement has decided to give up the ghost so I am will be having a revision sometime in Feb. I have had both of my knees done and didn't have any major problems before now but I am interested to hear from anyone who has had a revision done. Was it harder than the original surgery? Any suggestions on what I should do before? I plan on exercising both legs to build up muscle, should I do anything else? Thanks
  • Thanks for the advice. The knee that has gone bad was put in during 2006. My other knee was done in 2011. I will ask about the metal but after having 2 already I assume there is no problem. My surgeon is stating that this surgery will take longer and he is worried about problems with the bone. The original lower plate was put in at a slant so he will have to correct that. The surgery won't be until Feb so I will spend that time building muscle and stretching.

That's an excellent point, I don't remember my doctor asking about specific allergies.
I'm sure it was covered in the paperwork I signed before surgery.
  • I had a revision 8 months after the TKR due to the first knee being Cobalt/Chromium and turns out I am deathly allergic to Cobalt. Nobodies fault just my very bad luck. The second surgery was only marginally better than the first {which was a disaster as my body was rejecting knee # one before I was off of the table}.

The first surgery saw me at the VA for 17 days, the second 14 days popping opioids like breath mints. The physical terrorists did their best but it was a very bad situation from day one. Lots of stretching and muscle strengthening would be my best advice and...

  • I had revision surgery this last July on a seven year old TKR, surgery went fine. There was less swelling this time, however the PT took about three months which seems a little longer than before; everything is doing good now.
  • I can't help you with the revision, I've only had one TKR.
Building up the muscle will help.
Prior to my surgery I did a lot of stretching exercises. That helped me breeze through the procedure with minimal pain or discomfort.

I noticed other people at rehab, just after surgery, were having a lot of pain and trouble while trying to stretch their leg. I think stretching is very important, before and after the replacement. YMMV
Good luck, I hope it goes well for you.
