RMNP towing

Hello,

Would like feedback on the following. Planning a possible trip next summer to RMNP BY Estes Park staying at Glacier Basin c/g. I have never took a trip this far with elevation this much, mainly have been in state camping here OKC,

My question for you more experience people will my truck have ample power to pull my trailer?

Truck 2003 chevy 1500 hd crew cab 6.0l with 3.73 gears.
pulling a 30 bh tt with a weight about 6,000 range loaded.

Truck pulls fine where I been camping, but I am not sure about the elevation? I know that Colorado has more higher elevations than Estes Park, just wonder if I would be okay? I will be coming from OKC,

My advice would be to use the Fall river entrance. I know that I would do almost anything to avoid towing a TT through downtown Estes Park. I don't even drive through just in a car unless I'm parking there with out of state friends.

If you come into town on either 34 from the east or 36 from the southeast, stay on 34/Wonderview Ave to the Fall River Entrance (look on Google Maps). It's a little longer drive in the park, but isn't that what you are there for? Gives a chance to see bighorn sheep or elk in Horseshoe Park. The Fall River entrance station is rarely as busy as Beaver Meadows, so you miss the crowd in Estes and the traffic jam at the entrance.
  • I had that exact pickup but a 27 foot toy hauler when I lived in Montana. The engine and tranny have plenty of power to tow over the mountain passes. The issue with my setup was a gvw deal as the toy hauler I owned had a very heavy tongue weight. It still pulled wherever I wanted when loaded to 9k pounds. Just didn't like the fuel mileage.

You'll be fine. Although a diesel 3/4 ton would make the trip more comfortable.
  • No worries. Just allow extra time so you can go a bit slower as needed and enjoy the scenery.

You have more truck and less trailer than me and I have been there a couple times. Really.... no worries.
  • Engines that are not turbo-charged will suffer a power loss due to altitude, but on the plus side, can burn lower octane (and cheaper) fuel while doing it. If you are happy with the way your truck drags your TT at low altitude, you should be fine. You will, however, probably notice you've got a wee bit less grunt climbing those mountains.

Where people get into trouble is when their rig is marginally capable at low altitude. Such cases tend to display the weakness more prominently.
