Towing a Jeep Liberty Diesel

I've been towing our 2003 Jeep GC Overland for awhile now and it's been great but last month my wife asked why we don't tow our 2006 Jeep Liberty Diesel instead since it has fewer miles (62 K vs. 94K) and I didn't have a good answer except that the GC is a bit more comfortable.

We've had the Liberty since it was new and it's in perfect condition but spend 5 months a year sitting in the garage.

I've seen a lot of Liberty's being towed so I figure that must be just fine but thought I would check and get the opinion of others. Of course having my own rolling fuel tanker is of moderate interest....might be handy sometime.

Oh, it is 4WD with a transfer case.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Sully or anyone -- you posted this --My 2002 Liberty is a gasser but Ive towed it all over for almost 70K miles.

We need some advise --we have a 2002 Jeep liberty (gasser)--what four down towing system should we use?
And thanks

Thanks all for the positive responses. Yeh, the tow setup procedure is the same as my 2003 GC so that's not an issue. I also found out that the M@G brake system is available for the Liberty so that is a positive.

I may just go ahead and set it up that way I'll have both jeeps available to tow. I am still intrigued by the idea of using the Liberty as a fuel station....just need a 12V fuel transfer pump.

Our 2004 Jeep Liberty had 170,000 miles on it when we sold it last year. It towed beautifully and was a fun little car for off-roading. We didn't have any major repair done - just maintenance. If they were still sold we'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Towed our gas liberty for 13 years. Had 120,000 miles when we traded. Probably towed over another 100,000 miles. It was a great tow vrhicle. Traded it when repair bill reached $400 a months for 5 months in a row. After the 13 years, the dealer told me to plan on spending about another $1200 in repairs. That's when I figured I'd spent enough and traded it. Actually miss it a little.

The 2005/2006 Libby diesels only came with one transmission/transfer case, and they are all easily towable 4 down. Put the transfer case into neutral, and put the transmission in Park, and tow away.

Do be aware, you MUST put the transmission in Park. If you put it into neutral, you will burn up the transmission. I know a guy who did exactly that, and that was the result.

I have been towing my Liberty diesel for the 3 years I have owned a class A with no difficulty at all. Auto trans in Park, transfer case in neutral. The ignition has an intermediate position between locked and "on" which keeps the steering unlocked without draining the battery. I use a dummy key with no chip for a little extra security.

What does it say in the owners manual about towing? Jeep has been pretty good about putting specific details in the manual. Are you able to completely disengage the front and rear drives via the transfer case? i.e. does it freely roll away if the engine is off and the transfer case is in N (or some such)?
If so, it can likely be towed just like your other Jeep.

In checking the FMCA towing guide it does show the 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD (Diesel) with automatic transmission as being towable. It has n/a by manual transmission.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

We have towed our Jeep Liberty gas for over 70,000 miles. It currently shows 36,000 miles on the OD. That would put it over 100,000 miles on the chassis. We have had no issues towing it. It has a 6 speed manual tranny. Very simple to hook up. The only thing we do that others may not is we estimate every 50,000 of towing & driving miles and have all of the fluids changed out. We are due again right now.

That entails transmission, transfer case, front differential, rear differential, brake fluid, and coolant.
