2002 Exiss horse trailer wiring connector

We had the bad fortune of the wiring getting ripped out of the connector on the horse trailer.

I went out and bought a new pre-wired 7 wire connector, however the old connector is 6 wires and not all the same colors.

Can someone help me out please? I don't have much time to monkey around with a tester as we are leaving for a trip Friday, so am hoping someone knows the combination.

I believe in the old wiring picture the black and brown striped were wired together but am not positive.

  • You'll have to trace which wire does what.

Apply +12 to the yellow, red, green, brown, and purple; one at a time and see which lights come on.

This may help some, at least with regard to which pin positions do what. The 6-pin is missing the backup light function -vs- the 7-pin so will likely be unused on your horse trailer.

It's likely your trailer colors match the 6-way standard and the 7-way you bought matches the RV 7-way (middle one in the link above). Pull the cover on the new connector to verify.

You should be able to find where the ground wire attaches to the trailer frame. Once you know the ground wires, you can bring a car battery over near the trailer and connect the negative. Then try the various wires with the + to see what lights up.
  • Thanks.

The new connector is sealed; cannot take apart.

I can use a meter to test, but what has me puzzled is why the black wire and black/brown wires are tied. I literally cannot find anything on the web that has such an odd wiring configuration for the old connector.
  • Wow. LOL. I didn't even pay attention to the connector they gave me at the RV store. It's a 7 way connector and the old one is a 6 way. They say the memory is the first thing to go.

Well that changes things a bit.

I assumed you wanted to change to a 7-pin. Lol

Anyway, most horse (and utility) trailers use a 6-pin. Ours does and I use a 6 to 7 pin adapter to tow it.
  • I'm assuming your tow vehicle as a 6 pin plug and you were already using the two together? I would go get a new 6 pin pre wired and put it together the way it was.
Probably the reason the black and brown were wired together is because the trucks hot wire isn't hooked up ( common ) so someone hooked the brown wire to the black to power interior lights in the trailer. they would only be powered when tail light are on.
Our older horse and stock trailers, a 99 and a 2005, have 6 pins and we use an adapter to plug in to our trucks. Our 2017 horse trailer has a 7 pin connector.
  • Ok, it's figured out. I hadn't noticed there is a diagram on the wall of the front of the trailer (it's a GN). It used to be a pin type, but at some point was changed over to a standard 7 way connector. None of the trailer wire colors could be considered standard, at least this Exiss. What a pain, but all is well.

Without that diagram it would taken more time which we didn't have.

    Thanks for everyone's help.
