Allison trans. shift issue

Hello this is my first time here and post.

My 97 Newmar with 300 Cummins and Allison 6sp. just developed an issue tonight once I pulled into a campsite. It made a slight pop sound as I pulled in. I stopped and shifted into neutral. Then attempted to shift into reverse and got a flashing code on the shift indicator pad once I released the key pad reverse button. I tried to shift back to neutral and then into foreword without any luck. The key pad stated 6th gear so I tried to manually shift it down to first which the indicator said I was in but it did not shift into gear. I tried turning off the engine and restarting with out any luck.

Anybody got an idea what may be the problem?

Never had an issue with it before.

Fluid is full and not discolored.
  • Good job in checking for codes.

As soon as you see the first - -, you know there are no more. The good news is that your d-1 was - -.

Keep an eye on battery voltage. Actually, I would double check the battery connections to make sure they are clean and tight.
  • Next morning there were no signs of any problems. Shifted just fine. Last night I tried running the diagnostic by pushing both the up & down arrows. Each D 1,2,2,3,4,5 came up without a code. I cannot figure out what went wrong as it's functioning normal now.
  • Use the shift pad to check for diagnostic codes in the Allison:

    Key on, engine off:

Push up and down arrow at the same time. You are right at the juncture where this put you into diagnostic mode (earlier models) OR into OL (oil level) check.

If the latter, just push the up and down arrows again.

That will bring up d-1 followed by any code. - - means no codes.

If there is a code for d-1, record it. Push mode button to proceed to d-2, etc.

When you get a d- (number) and - -, there are no more codes.

Push D to exit. Look up codes on Allison's website.
  • I know on the GM pickups that is one indication of a problem with NSBU switch. Sometimes it is just the wire connection being loose or gets water and debris in it. Sometimes it is the switch itself. If you have a code reader you can read the codes. I would try to clear them and see if it helps at least to get it going.
