GOLF CART battery BALANCE/EQUALIZEcharge???

bought a new golf cart charger a Lester Summit 2 for a 36 volt cart. Plugged it in today first time and it charged and the proper indicator lights went on and all worked fine.... right now a green light is blinking fast and according to the manual it is performing a BALANCE/ EQUALIZE charge cycle. my meter is reading on the batteries a 44.2 charge. BUT MY MANUAL TELLS ME NOTHING ABOUT WHAT A BALANCE / EQUALIZE CYCLE IS and if 44 v is ok.... anyone know what that cycle means and is that 44.2 v reading OK???
thanks for any answers.....

THANKS for the response. while it was charging normally before my meter was reading around 38.3, once it was complete they read 37.10, than it kicked in to this balance mode and the batts read the 44.2. will check it again a a couple hours. thanks again, as long as i know its normal operation... The problem remains that it was "charging" at 38.3v! That is like 12.76v for one pair. Not charging at all. Something is wrong!

You want that 44 volts when charging right from the start till the batts are full, and then if you leave it plugged in once the batts are full, the voltage should drop to say 40 volts for the "float voltage".
  • I call that level of charging TOP CHARGING.

Charge then let the voltage stabilize for a few days.

Measure each individual battery and if one turns lower than point .3 (three tenths of a volt lower than the other batteries it's time to charge that battery as an individual. Charge at 11 amps until voltage reaches 8.00

Balance/Equalize and Desulfate are all related.. in fact in some system are all the same thing.

A limited time controlled overcharge 44 volts on a 36 volt system Sounds about right (45 volts would be my best guess at what it should be).

What this does is kind of complex but it will "Boil" the cells.. Shortly.
Now if the cell is FULLY charged. the excess just boils water into brown's gas (2 parts Hydrogen to one oxygen I do not suggest you smoke near it KABOOM).

but if a cell is say a bit "Behind" the others in charging it will first come up to FULL UP then make brown's gas.

The "Boiling" action will stir up the fluid in the cells which can "Startify" (The acid is heavier than water so the acid tends to settle to the bottom and the top is more water.. Not a good thing at all).

And it may also knock some sulfacation off the cell plates. also a good thing.

So let it do what it is doing

Read the manual for the Progressive Dynamic Charge Wizard for one of my sources. It does the same thing.

thanks for the explanation, first golf cart I ever had and want to try to keep the batteries as long as I can......

  • I hope you remembered to have the batteries on "disconnect" from the RV circuits while using the charger the first time.

If the actual voltage is above 16 volts there might be damage to some appliances. Did the charger have any warning for use in an RV?
  • Oh oh. I don't understand that 38.3 at all. Much too low.

It says there is an app you should use for choosing the correct charging profile. I suspect a wrong setting.

The specs for DC output and the manual are very unclear wrt the charging profiles' voltages, but it depends on what your "battery pack" is.

Need to find out the actual voltage "stages" in the auto charging you have selected. Last stage might be a "finish" stage that was mentioned some profiles have.

Be sure you have selected Flooded batts if you do have flooded.

The 44.2 for six 6s is like 14.73v for a pair. That is a normal charging voltage, no problem.

However, it is not an equalization level voltage, which would be more like 16v a pair, or 48v.
