GPS suction cup adherence to windshield

Has anyone found a way to attach the suction cup holder to their windshield?

Normal suction attachment fails with temperature change. I have tried taping the suction cup to the windshield with plastic tape, or Gorilla tape with tape eventually loosing adhesion due to weight of unit, vibration, or temperature changes.

I am thinking of super-gluing the cup to the windshield as a last resort.

I have two Dash Cams (One Fwd and One Aft) and also a Radar Detector with GPS - all three on suction cups.

The suction cup for the Escort Max 360 has a sticky substance out of the box and has not presented a problem. The two dash cams were always falling off with prolonged temperature changes.

I replace the mounts for those two devices with Ram brand mounts - larger suction cups. (I believe 4") Not perfect, but an improvement.

I finally discovered putting a VERY SMALL dab of Vaseline on my finger and putting a very, very thin layer on the outer edge of the suction cup before applying to the glass. (I, of course, clean all pieces and glass first with alcohol and apply a warm suction cup to a warm glass if possible.)

Have not had one come loose in many months.

EDIT: By "outer edge" I mean maybe the outer 1/4"-3/8" of the contact surface. The center area of the suction cup does not actually contact the glass and a small area in the center is under a vacuum holding the two surfaces in contact with each other.

We have used the suction cup mount that came with our Garmin Nuvi 285 for years in 4 different vehicles. We've never had a problem with it sticking on the glass. Everyone once in a while, it will lose suction, but that might happen 3 or 4 times a year.

Clean the glass and the suction. Put a drop or two of water on the rubber and smear it around. Firmly press the mount on the window and the move the lever to lock it in place.

Mine would fall off all the time until I put just a little bit of water on the cup just before installing. Now it stays put until I take it off. Works great! Give it a try, You have nothing to loose, but some bucks for a new mount.

I superglued a suction cup mount and it worked for me, of course I lost it when I had the windshield replaced. Now I have one that mounts to dash with 3M adhesive, and is held to my phone or GPS with a magnet so I can easily switch. If I was having problems with this one sticking and wanted it permanently on the windshield I would probably superglue it too.

Some suction cups are much better than others. But a clean suction cup and a clean glass is your best hope.

If a GPS, I much prefer the beanbag type dash mount to a suction cup mount. Down low out of line of vision, and easy to move to floor out of sight when vehicle is parked.

Johno2 is correct. Make sure you are cleaning the windshield..alcohol.

I have one of these. It has not moved in over a year. Very solid.

Cleaning good with alcohol wipes helps somewhat, then clean it each time you remove and replace. The changing temps will harden the seal, and it does need to be removed and reset often.
Also, be sure and clean the little circle off the glass whenever you remove and store the GPS. The little circle is a sure indication to everyone that you have a valuable GPS in the vehicle. You could end up with a lot of broken glass even with the GPS hidden.

Ditch the suction cup. They age too fast sitting on the glass and will not hold for very long, even if conditions are perfect. I have one spot under the windshield glass where I have permanently adhered a pad of 3M "Hook and Loop". This is similar to Velcro in concept but is much stronger. The hooks and loops have a very positive hold. I use this pad for GPS antenna or anything else I want up there. I have door-mounted audio tweeters, they are also adhered with this material and they stay in place through many door slams.

Please dont super glue anything to your windshield. There are PAGES and PAGES of various GPS type car mounts on Ebay. Find an alternative to the suction cup if its not working for you.
