Suction Cup Windshield Mount

I have a dash cam that mounts to the windshield with a suction cup and lever arrangement. My problem with it that it falls off, sometimes after hours, sometimes after days and sometimes after weeks. I clean the windshield with Windex and wet the cup with water which is about as much as I know to do. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be more effective? Thanks in advance.
  • I've had good luck with a very very thin smear of vaseline on a suction cup mount that was being mounted to a plastic stick-on puck thingy (a GPS mount in this case). This does have the disadvantage that it slides around for awhile at first, but it seems to stay stuck a lot longer than without the vaseline. The sliding isn't much of a problem for me since the puck is kinda sorta horizontal, but could be a difficulty on a kinda sorta vertical windshield.

My theory is that the vaseline can fill in whatever tiny surface imperfections exist in the suction cup or the puck and thus give it a stronger seal. I don't know if the theory is completely sound, but the results have been quite positive; it stays stuck for a couple months or so instead of a couple days or so. The vaseline hasn't noticeably harmed the suction cup rubber material.
  • You didn't say what kind of Dash Cam you had but in my case it is a G1WH

Mine was always falling off so I went to a mirror mount and it works GREAT and depending on the type of Dash Cam you have there may be one available for it, they are cheap enough that I have one in each of my vehicles, no problem, just take the camera along as I change rides.

There are 4 types that they sell, there are pictures in the ad, maybe you can get one that will work for you.

I have used this vendor many times and they are fast and reliable.
  • Did you clean the windshied real good? Also sometimes I wipe a little saliva on the rubber cup on some to improve holding when they fall off. :)

I looked at those before but am concerned that my mirrors have lots of electronics and the wires probably won't stretch down to the new position?

  • The hotter the windshield is when you apply the suction, the better it will lock on. I too use a thin coat of Vaseline to get the suction cup to really lock down.

Just a note, California now has some specific regulations about windshield mounted devices. Can only be a certain size obstruction and has to be mounted in a specific spot on the windshield. Perhaps California members can provide more info.

Mine also have all those wires, but you don't stretch out the wires any, just bend the mirror down a bit as if you are adjusting it, when installing then re position it afterward.

The clamp goes over the mirror mount arm and fits around the wires on the arm. I also was concerned about that but it worked out OK on my RV and My Yukon and on a friends smaller car with a lot more wires on the arm.
  • I use one for my cel phone with the GPS navigator. I no longer use the windshield, but the door window. I wipe the suction cup with saliva and it stays for weeks with no problem. I also make sure both the suction cup and the glass are completely clean firsthand. The power cord reaches the cig lighter socket no problem and doesn't obstruct the windshield.
