How to install Wasp screens?

I know the subject is covered here often, but I didn't come across any good posts about the "how to" part. Often there are screens manufactured for specific furnaces, water heaters, etc., but that doesn't seem to be the case for most of my trailer equipment. I bought stainless screen material and am wondering about the best way to install it. I'm going to start with my water heater since I just got stung while servicing it. Any recommendations on securing the mesh in place? Epoxy? Nuts and bolts? If I use epoxy, any recommendations on one that stands up to heat? Good old JB Weld? I have rolls of aluminum tape. Don't know if that adhesive would hold up though.

    X-2

I use the stainless screen on both the Hot water heater and Furnace.

I had no problem with installation, just obtain the correct one for your vehicle.

They serve as insurance against mud daubers and other flying insects. The screens insure against a blocked flue. Some spiders are attracted to the smell of propane and have created problems for me in the past.

  • Just a note. Windshield de-icer kills wasps and hornets instantaneously. We have tiny black hornets down here with a 155 mm howitzer mounted on their tail. The worst are the tarantula hunters. Officially designated as having the most painful insect sting on the planet. Believe it...

Anyway, thanks for reminding me about the screens. We have to turn on the cold water and wait a bit so we don't get scalded. Hot water heaters get neglected.
  • I bought the camco stainless screen that is held on with springs for my heater also. This screen came with a tool that will reach through the screen mesh and install the spring. It's just a shaft, like a small screw driver or steel wire with a slot cut into the end.

Didn't install anything at the water heater or generator, but try to remember to open them slowly.

I used fiberglass window screening for both upper and lower frig vents, AC cover, LP door louvers, and battery door louver. It's cheap and cuts with scissors.

I cleaned the area well and used high temp hot glue to install.

The silicone mentioned above may be more rugged but I didn't want a lot of trouble if I wanted to remove it.

I also screened in underneath the gas bottles on our 5thW.

I did the 5thW in 2001 and would estimate maybe 40K miles and it's all still on there. The only screen I've had to come loose was in an AC cover that I didn't clean well and under our previous 5thW when my wife decided to get a puppy.

I had to remove part of the screen under the gas bottles once to remove the cover of the black and grey tanks. Once re-installed, I only had to re-heat the glue to attach the screen again.
  • I simply put a bead of silicone around the opening on the inside of the door. Then I pressed aluminum window screen into the silicone bead and let it cure in place. It lasted well over 10 years until I sold the camper.
  • Our add on screen on water heater opening was installed by dealer. However, the times I have attempted to place back on have been unsuccessful. It doesn't stay on well. The screen is supposed to be held in place by two small springs with small clips on each end. One end of each spring is clipped to the screen that came with the camper and the other to the add on screen. The original screen will not keep wasps out. For the life of me, I can not get the additional screen (smaller mesh) back on where it will stay. I also will appreciate any help out there. Our dealer has these in his parts department. I always forget to bring this up when at the dealer for other more pressing repairs.
