Questions about a fuel solenoid for an Onan 7000.

In troubleshooting my non-running Onan 7000 generator the fuel solenoid did not pass a continuity test so I started looking around for a replacement.

The Onan part number is 307-2756 but the label on the failed solenoid said "Advanced Fuel Components - Model 111". Since the fuel pump on the generator had been replaced with a non-spec'd fuel pump I didn't really trust that the solenoid was spec.

I found a "307-2756" in Cummins warehouse in Portland, OR and had it shipped to me. Imagine my surprise upon opening the box to pull out an AFC Model 111 fuel solenoid. grrr

Does anyone know if the 7000's always shipped with an AFC-111 installed or is this it's replacement?

How often, generally speaking, do fuel solenoid's fail?

Thanks!
  • If the part you pulled was identical to the part an official Cummins dealer shipped you, it's probably the right part. Have you installed it to see if it fixes the problem?

Agreed. My question was more about the history of genset out of curiosity sake. OCD issues. :D

Not yet, waiting on the fuel pump to arrive. The one that was installed seems to have a rated PSI of 3.5 to 5:

Whereas the 149-2267 fuel pump is rated 4 to 6 PSI:

  • The PSI on the Airtex is ok. As long as the pump can fill the carburetor bowl faster than the engine sucks it out it's working properly.
  • Gotcha--no idea about OEM spec or failure rate for that particular solenoid, personally.

Do you mind if we ask what symptoms you're seeing? A no-crank no-start is different from a cranking no-start, for example; the former doesn't immediately suggest a fuel delivery problem, the latter does suggest a fuel delivery problem.

I find quit often that non-spec (aftermarket) parts are better built than the original parts. Often, someone like a motorhome builder, will put out a bid for 10,000 7,000 watt gen sets over a four year period not to exceed $xxxx.xx each for the four year period. The mfgs have to cut corners someplace to win the bid. Then when when they have a lot of problems with something like a fuel solenoid, they'll start selling a better part.

That's not always the case, but it certainly happens.

Genset will crank but not start.

Solenoid failed continuity test. Prior to failure the genset ran for about three hours and then died.

    :D

Thanks to all for the comments!
  • Sounds like you're on the right track; if the genny ran for three hours, the fuel pump could well be fine, and you might try slappin' that new solenoid in there right away. However, if the solenoid is attached to the fuel pump or otherwise situated such that it makes sense to do both at once AND you're fine with a non-functional genny for a bit, by all means wait for the pump and godspeed :)
  • Do you have older 7NHM Marquis model or the newer 7HGJAB RVQG genset; and are you referring to fuel solenoid in carb bowl, or solenoid at electric fuel pump?

    The 7NHM spec D.

    Solenoid at the fuel pump.

Based upon flow rates I would agree with you but ..

    :D

The new pump arrived today and just look at the difference in construction. Surely that has to count for something, eh?
