7 way plug on Ford SD

Trailer was built in in May '14. Sealed cord all the up to junction box inside of trailer. I did take a gander at both ends a couple hours ago and did use a small blade screwdriver as suggested. Cord just seems very sloppy in truck socket. All is okay with plug in box for 5th wheel. Sadly (CRS) I don't recall how the cord fit into bumper plug last year. Thanks for all your suggestions folks. Just maybe, it wouldn't hurt to replace the truck/bumper plug w/ same to see if that would help any. All else fails, would have an extra on hand for "X" reason.

my 2005 has a build start date of 12/2003 and a completed date of 1/2004... and its titled as a 2005...

and with manufacturers doing the lowest cost build .. I am sure the connector is not of the Highest quality .

but it could be the truck connector... same issues. lowest bidder.

I have 2 tags .. stating weight is 7,500 pounds..

but it scales EMPTY. minus both 30# propane tanks.. at 8,300 pounds.
and all 3 tanks are Empty as well. dry.

Mine is sloppy too. Pulled the trailer home from the dealer 5 1/2 years ago and while backing in my wife noticed some lights were not working. The door is just not very tight. Has been bungeed in tight every time since.

I think the consensus is the angle of the cover is not the real issue.

I've had more trouble with OEM molded trailer plugs than with the Ford connector. I've replaced several to get better contact. IMO if the electrical contacts are tight, and the trailer plug is pushed in far enough to overlap the contacts, the tab on the cover doesn't really hold much--it's the tight contacts doing the holding. I use the tab to indicate that I've got the trailer plug pushed in all the way. That said, I did have to replace my son's 2002 Super Duty plug last year because it was no longer tight enough.

the trailer side of the 7 pin had pincher type of connectors.. over time the pinchers get weak.. poor contact to truck side.


try using a small screwdriver and bend the pinchers inward (near center) increasing the pressure on the truck side pins...

or replace the trailer side 7 pin.

Pics posted by RoyB is what I'm talking about. Cover opens sideways, rather up. I put dio grease on trailer plug and as I stated in 1st post, all last winter, no problem. Now when I plug in trailer, the lights don't seem to make full 100% contact. All the pins appear to be okay, NO corrosion or green, but light cord just seems to be a tad sloppy in truck. I understand the cover is to simply hold cord in. May have to do what Wyo Traveler suggested and replace truck plug. Wonder if Ford would do seeing it's still under warranty.

maintenance... any connector out in the weather need cleaning...

NO Weather Seals.. and the trailer side of the 7 pin has way more issues ..

why do you think many stores sell replacements...

clean contacts with 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper.. and spray with brake cleaner... and apply a small amount of dielectric grease.
every year.

and check the LID of the 7 pin on the truck.. maybe damaged.. as it is designed to HOLD the trailer connector from moving a lot, or unplugging. but made of plastic and can be damaged.

Never had one not hold the plug in but you may need to clean the plug and socket contacts for a good connection
