Air conditioner gasket question

I need to replace the ac gasket on my travel trailer. It's a Dometic roof top ac and it leaks. I've tried tightening the 4 bolts, but to no avail. What's the best gasket or gasket kit I can get? Also, can someone point me to a good step by step video or tutorial on how to do it? I want to make sure I do it right. Thanks.
  • There's really nothing to replacing the gasket - with power to the rig disconnected just remove the ceiling shroud, unplug the ceiling unit from the top unit, noting what wire goes where, remove the four bolts securing the ceiling unit to the top unit, remove the old gasket material from the underside of the top unit, secure the new gasket in the same location, and put it all back together again, correctly torquing the four bolts for proper compression of the gasket material. Both generic and Dometic specific versions are available but both do the same job.
  • Almost all the cut outs for Air Conditioners are the same dimension and the gaskets are sized appropriately. I doubt there is any meaningful difference between gaskets so don't waste time researching. When replacing just make sure you clean things up first - pressure keeps the gasket sealed - don't use caulk.

Edit. If your going through the trouble of replacing the gasket make sure you clean the condenser and evaporator coils. Most regularly clean the condenser coil but few clean the evaporator coil which requires removing lots of screws and a metal shroud. It's the evaporator coil and a clogged drain pan underneath it that creates many of the AC problems posted on this forum. You should make sure your "leak" issue isn't something as simple as a plugged drain pan b4 you replace the gasket.

remember those bolts get sungged not as tight as they,ll go.

    About 60% compression IIRC.
  • Read directions on gasket box. I thought they were all the same. My old one, compress till 50 or 60 percent compressed, then every year just a little tug on bolts to make sure still tight. Last one I got had little tabs that said to compress till little plastic tab made contact. Both gaskets were the same principal but different how much to compress.

Is it okay to tilt the AC back to clean off the old gasket?

Sure, but as with any appliance with a compressor you want to allow it to sit level in it's normal operating position afterwards for several hours before running it.
