Another awning question.

I have a 12 volt awning that goes straight out from the TT. It is worthless as the sun sets lower in the sky. :( I am looking to replace it with a manual awning such as the Carefree Pioneer which can be lowered to block the setting sun.

Other than door opening clearance, what else should I look for?

Since I have the 12 volt available do they make an electric awning that drops down to block the sun?
  • The Vista Shade for Electric Awnings comes in two pieces: a 6 ft. body and an insert that stays on the awning and rolls up.

WHen you open the awning, you attach the bottom 6 feet with the built in zipper.
  • Well I looked at replacing my awning with a manual awning and YIKES!! :E

With deliver and all it was over $700.00 with the arms on the net. ($1200.00 installed by the local dealer.) Double YIKES!! :E:E

So as suggested I looked for a sun shade. The questions now are,:h
    • Why are the shades for electric awnings more expensive than for manual awnings?
    • Do they all have the same slot width for the top cord?
    • Can they be rolled up with the awning? It is going to take a step ladder to thread it into the roller each time.
  • There are shades made that go on your awning roller and extend to the ground. They are a lot cheaper than a new awning.
  • I purchased some curtains that slide into the open slot on the roller after it is extended. I roll up the awning with the curtain attached. I remove it when we travel.
  • I have the same type of Dometic SoundGuy, but it did take me a trip or 2 to figure out that you can much pretty pull it down as far as it will go and lock it in place. Though at times the lock nuts can come loose if you haven't cranked on them, I think because the "shock" part works so well.

It doesn't lower as much as some I've seen...but any more and it would contact the door too much anyways...

A better awning than that Carefree? :p

I replaced the Carefree of Colorado power awning on our 2008 Spree with a Dometic 8500 manual awning for exactly the same reasons. Be aware though that the mounting system is different for each type of awning so when the power awning is removed you'd be left with quite a few holes in the trailer sidewall that would have to be filled in, both to prevent water from getting in and for esthetics.

Our current Freedom Express has a Dometic 9100 power awning that can be tilted down at each end ... never a big fan of power awnings but this one has probably changed my mind as it works just fine. :B
