Found a little leak

Noticed an off smell in the right front storage, found a small leak on the roof. Question is, enough water came thru to slightly wrinkle the wall-paper inside my right front closet. So, since I don't know how to take this thing apart, should I get a dehumidifier and hope for the best? Do I drill holes to probe for moisture? 2007 Jayco BHS that I expected to use for another 10 years.

Thanks (And I did search thru a bunch of posts, but must not have asked the right question, because I didn't see a similar problem)
  • Far worse than I ever thot. Water, evil dang stuff, has spread all thru the top and made it soft. Needs new roof, but tech thinks the side structure is OK. 6000 to 8000 to fix. Trailer is worth 10,000 to 12,000 to sell, which I can't with damage. And I can't afford it. Will call insurance, but don't know if will cover.

Dealer will give me $5000 for it right now. I was thinking of downsizing, but not quite yet.

I thot all the seams and stuff were good, but the tech showed me where the water would seep thru.

They did wonder if I kept it under cover, because it was so clean.

I can't believe I missed any breaks in the sealant. But they are there, if you get close.
  • Temp repair w/duct tape and caulk, until I can get some Eternabond
  • I got the leak fixed, but I had loaned out the trailer, and didn't check the roof when I got it back. Looked like it had something hard, like a metal edge, dropped on the right front top corner. Not visible from the ground, and not damaged in motion. Weird, but it is what it is. I am currently off work, and outgo is exceeding income, but I will talk to the folks here that are experienced with Jayco. New dealer in town, picked up the franchise when Watts went under, and they do good work, but shop rate is high. The old Watts RV is open now under a different name, but I think they still have some of the staff from the time they had the Jayco franchise.

Thanks for input, not what I want to hear, but is how it usually goes.
  • Hi,

Adding a dehumidifier will NOT solve the issue, and may hardly even slow the damage that is occurring on a daily basis.

IF DIY is not an option, get the unit to an RV dealer and have them perform a leak test asap.

After all the leaks are sealed then repairs can begin. This is NOT going to be cheap to fix, as all the wet material needs to be removed and replaced.
  • If you dont know how to take this all apart I suggest you take it to your dealer and get him to find and fix the leak. A dehumidifier is not going to help the issue. If you "hope for the best" you may not have anything left within a few years let alone 10!
