Just bought a camper (having electric heater problems)

Hi All,

The wife and I just bought a 2000 Arctic Fox 1140 and we're exited to get it on the road.

I was playing with things and learned we have two heaters, one is the propane heater (by the tanks) but the other is an electric heater under the dinette set) that works on AC power.

So went out in the morning and it was blowing cold air so I did some searches and everything I've found so far is all about the propane heaters so wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

The sail switch keeps coming up in the propane style so I wonder if the electric heater also uses the same basic functions as the propane?

Thanks in advance!

Bill
  • Just a quick update, left tank empty, switched over and the PROPANE heater works just fine:R
  • The other two vents, at least on my 990, are not powered and are just to allow heat access to the basement area to keep the tanks from freezing.

This makes sense, I'll double check the valves on the tanks and give this a try tonight when I get home.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the responses, so when I turned on the thermostat with the propane off I got heat from the from the two blower vents under the dinette are, there are also two vents coming out from under the stove area where the propane tanks are located and nothing came from those vents so I just assumed it has an electric heater.

I'm sitting here at my desk so I'll try the ideas posted and see what happens when I get home.

Look forward to learning from this site, thanks again for the posts.

You need to double check your propane valves. The two blower vents under the dinette are from the propane fired furnace, which by the way uses 12 volts. Your propane must have actually been turned on.

  • Yes sir, Tigard Oregon, we sold 3 acres in the Scholls area and moved to a city lot so we can spend more time traveling and less time working.

Is that Tigard, Oregon? Lived there for a couple years. Came from Beaverton over near Progress.
If the fan runs the only thing left is the high temperature cutout. Try turning the unit off, let it sit for awhile and then turn it back on. Most high temperature cut outs are a bi-metal device that flexes when over heated and will reset.
Get the make and model of your heater and post for better responses.

  • IS it an 'electric heater' OR an AC propane heater'

IF it's an electric heater than it would have just a fan and a heater grid (like a space heater).......fan blows/electric current flow heats grid/warm air comes out. Grid may be bad or an internal fuse blown for grid circuit.

IF it's an AC furnace with propane heat....
It will use 120V AC to motor and 24V AC thru transformer for the rest f furnace circuit.......relay to sail switch to limit switch to control board to ignitor/gas valve.

Blower motor running......then relay has been energized
Next would be sail switch Is it making up?
Then limit switch Is it closed?
Then power to board Pull connector/clean contacts.
    Then power to ignitor/gas valve?

Just like a DC furnace except 24V AC control power
Atwood 8900 Series can be DC or AC
  • If that is the one under the dinette then it is your propane furnace. It is typical for it to blow cold air till it causes the sail switch to turn on to allow propane to flow to the burner. If the sail switch does not make contact then the furnace will just keep running and blowing cold air.

Do you have your propane turned on?

I have never heard of a AF with an electric heater also.
  • Don't know if your 1140 is like my 990, but if so the heater under the dinette seat is propane and uses the blower. I am not aware of any factory installed electric heater in a TC other than as an option to add to the AC unit.
