Please verify that I know what I'm doing here. (Weights)

My stickers and the tow guide don't seem to agree.

White sticker on door says:
GVWR: 10,000
GAWR front: 5500 at 60psi
GAWR rear: 6500 at 80psi

Yellow sticker on door jamb:
Combined weight of blah blah blah: 3,104
Inflate tires to 60 front and 80 rear.

I assume this means my empty truck weighs 10,000 - 3,104 = 6896. That doesn't match anything else I've found.

Guide says 6,703 with payload of 3,300.
GAWR rear 6000.
GCWR 19,800

Guide says Mega Cab (mine ain't)
GAWR rear 6500
GCVWR 19,800

No guide entry for crew cab with 6500 pound rear axle. Both CC with 6000 pound axle and MC with 6500 pound axle use 19,800 for GCVWR. I suppose that's my number and it's based on the 3.73 gear as much as anything.

I'll scale it soon with a full tank of gas, hitch installed, and sway/distribution bars in bed of truck near tailgate. Now, replace 3,104 with 10,000 minus actual weight of truck with "truck stuff." This new number minus me, her, and a cooler, gives me available tongue weight capacity.

I assume then that I verify all axles (including trailer) are good, truck "all aboard" plus tongue is less than 10k, and the best guess GCVWR is 19,800 for lack of a better number.
  • Get the truck weighed. Get individual axle weights. Subtract your door tag axle weights from the scale weights. That will tell you your exact capacities.

    Weigh with full tank fuel/people/gear.

Typically this number (3104) includes all the basic truck stuff and all accessories and options at the time the truck was built. As others have indicated go to the scales. Brochure and tow guide weights will always be a little different as they often are based on the basic truck. Many have found the yellow sticker is within twenty or so pounds of real scale weights.
  • My truck was also 200 lbs heavier than the brochure weight. Yellow sticker was accurate.
  • What is this guide you mentioned? If it is a brochure, OEM web site, or other online database, then it is likely the base curb weight. No one buys the base model no options truck.
  • What others have said X2.
Plus that 6000# rear GAWR is for the 17" wheels.
The 6500# rear GAWR is with 18" or 20" wheels on a Ram 2500.
