Replacement of Single-stage Parallax converter

Have you replaced a single-stage Parallax converter with a Parallax (4455TC or similar) ParaMode with TempAssure (temperature compensation)? Was the installation difficult? Has the result been satisfactory?

My single-stage Parallax converter is a panel mount. But the ParaMode kit I think I saw somewhere is deck mount. Would that be a problem?

Recently someone posted about replacing a single-stage Parallax with a Progressive Dynamics multiple stage. The PD seems to have a good reputation. But I like the idea of temperature compensation. And the PD does not appear to have that feature.

For questions get a hold of Randy at best converters. He can probably help you. He helped me quite a lot..

  • Not a hard mod but will require you use a few hand tools to mount the new power supply.

The metal box on the left is removed from the bottom of your converter and the old power supply section is removed from it.
The new converter supply (PDI9260) is on the right and will take its place in the metal box.

    And here it is installed.

I took this opportunity to install a heavy duty 20A light switch (right of conv.) to be able to turn off power to the converter if needed.
  • As long as you have space behind the panel and easy access to mount the Paramode it will be just as easy as the slot mount PD4600. Although the PD4600 kit comes with an improved fuse board that is available separately if desired.

If you are expecting a fast charge on generator the Paramode is a bit low on voltage. PD actually hits the voltage pretty good for most conditions.
  • If you have an inverter, you may want to consider that as the battery charger. Quite often their charger is better suited to modern batteries than the one in converters.
  • I just did a swap on my magnatek I would look at the pd4600 series. It is just my opinion but the temp control system you are talking about is just trying to compete with PD battery wizard 4 stage charger. As you will see in my post the 4600 is super easy and is a better product. but just my opinion. here are a few links.
