Rockwood Roo 21ss Nissan Frontier v6

I am looking at a Rockwood Roo 21ss and I drive a 2013 Nissan
Frontier 4.0 V-6 with tow package. Is my truck going to be able to handle it?
  • No issues towing with my Tacoma and we have some decent hills in the northeast, "off hand" I remember researching the Nissan vs the Tacoma back 11 yrs ago. If I recall the specs matched up with both trucks with the tow pkgs but I was told to stay away from the Nissan. Also I remember meeting a Nissan owner once towing a similar TT and he wasn't happy with the way the Nissan pulled. Just another observation is I don't come across Nissan's pulling similar TT's but I have seen it with the Tacomas.

  • I pulled a very similar Hybrid, a StarCraft 21SSO. Same floorplan and similar weights. I pulled with a 2004 Durango 5.7L V8. It pulled quite well but I would never consider pulling with a V6 (Had a Nissan XEV6 as well). Would also not consider pulling with a smaller, less rigid framed vehicle.

Even the smaller hybrids that weigh in loaded at around 4,000lbs would be a bit much unless you live in flat lands. Then they're a possibility. I used my Nissan V6 truck to pull a 2,500 lb loaded popup which worked very well.

6500Lbs is what the book says

    That's not the payload capacity.
Look for a sticker on the driver's door. It'll say something like "Occupants and cargo should not exceed xxxxlbs". That the payload capacity.
You'll always run out of payload capacity before even getting close to the max towing capacity.
  • Without getting into weight police forensics, although the Nissan will pull it, I would not want to on a consistent basis especially if hills are involved. I have a Roo 23 WS and prior had a Keystone 234exp which was basically the same size but lighter, and towed them both with a 2000 Silverado 5.3, 2013 F150 5.0, and 2013 or 2015 GM 2500 6.0.

I could only imagine doing so with a 6 banger.

Roos are front heavy, especially the 21SS, 24WS, 23IKSS. Our 23WS used to be the 23SS and is now the 24WS, basically its the 21SS's bigger brother by about 3'. The published hitch weights are inaccurate. Don't be surprised if its 600lb hitch weight is actually close to 1000 if not more loaded, especially if you fill the water tank which is located in the front 1/3 of the rig.

Our 23WS had a published hitch of 600 and in actuality its 1200 lbs.

    i would say No.
with a fictional "dry" tongue weight of 600lbs., it'll easily have a tongue weight of at least 700lbs. loaded for camping.
and the trailer could easily weigh over 6000lbs. loaded.
what's the payload capacity of your Frontier?
