Last week I read a road test of a Titan XD. It was a Cummins and the tester said he was trying for good fuel economy, running 65 mph on cruise control, and the best he could get was 16 mpg on the highway.

If true the big cummins in the Ram gets a lot better fuel economy.

Nissan finally got their specs up. The "GAS" XD is like a heavy half 5.0L or None Max Tow Ecoboost F150. Slightly less payload and equal Tow ratings. Max Tow Heavy Half F150 Ecoboost has more tow rating.

Diesel XD has comparable tow ratings to a Heavy Half F150 Ecoboost w/Max Tow but it's payload is slightly less than a standard F150.

Definitely not 3/4 ton but definitely a heavy half. After owning both a Titan and a F150, you'll never see another Nissan in my driveway.

The new 2016 F150 is very impressive. Great 1890# payload, great 10,900# towing, Very powerful with only 5110# vehicle weight and 385 hp/387# torque. An average of 18.5 mpg mixed driving with only 1000 miles. I'm happy so far. Oh, and thousands below $50K MSRP, and thousands below $40K with paying price.

That's only about 1 mpg better than a gasser F250 Crew 4WD 3.73 I was considering. The F250 was cheaper and handled much more payload. The truck was only about $2K more than my F150 so I considered it a bargain. Unfortunately Mileage was to bad to consider even though I loved the truck with the 6.2L.

The new F150 has 1890# payload and 10,900 lbs of towing. More than enough for the largest trailer that would overload the 11,100/1,110# hitch rating. Then I'd still have a few hundred lbs of payload left.

With a weight of only 5110 lbs with a 385 Hp and 387# torque, that's equivalent to a HD truck weighing at 7150# to have 539 Hp @ 5750 rpm and 542# torque @ 3850 rpm.

Downfall is the weight of the truck is light and will be manhandled by a trailer that's not pulling good. So it will need to have the hitch adjusted correctly and the trailer loaded correctly.

So far with only 1000 mile I'm getting between 18.5 and 19.0 mpg with MIXED town, expressway driving.

On the other hand, the truck wouldn't have the additional stability of all that weight, nor, I imagine, the engine braking of the Nissan's V8.

I'm not so sure on the 3.5 Ecoboost HD doing better. I had the Max Tow package and because of the terrain I live in (not flat as glass roads) I was constantly in boost. Over the 10,000 miles I owned that truck my average combined fuel mileage was 14.xx. It was pretty comparable to many of the other gas V8's I drove. But I did have the 3.73, 6'5" bed with a CC setup. I'm sure someone will chime in who gets 18mpg, but in my experience when used as a truck they seem to all fall in line within 1-2 MPG of one another, with the exception of the diesel variants.

You're correct. I've had personal and company truck gassers of most every brand and flavor, save for the eco boost over the last 20 years. Prolly 30 different trucks driven in all climates and altitudes and while unloaded highway mpgs have climbed a couple mpg from the 90s til now, fuel maps have been pretty dialed for a long time. No more "dumb" T I systems or spread bore Holleys or quadrajunks pouring gas thru the secondaries.
Once used as a truck, hp per gal of gas is about the same, yet there's always the 55 saves lives group and the perpetual drafters and the embellishers that claim or get exceptional mileage.
No magic bullet for a/f ratios. When your foot is on the skinny pedal the gas guage drops about the same regardless of truck!

I've got a friend who's owned and really liked two of them, but they both got about 14 lifetime average for him. That includes a fair bit of towing and mountain roads, to be fair. Both were 4wd crew cabs with the longer bed option.

Many of us have done better with the Ecoboost. A lot depends upon how you drive it. Over the 5 years I owned mine, the non-towing mileage was about 19 mpgUS, and most of that was with a pair of kayaks on top. But most of our driving was towing an ~8K trailer, and there the long-term mileage was only 10.2 mpgUS.

As you say, when in boost, the mileage is no better than any V8, but it is possible, with care, to stay out of boost when just cruising around. Admittedly, I do drive like the old man I am.

That, and the fact that the Nissan XD is a really heavy truck (compared to the F150HD) suggests to me that it will have worse mileage, more in line with the big V8s in the HD trucks, like Jeremiah said.

I think you are right...it's going to be a wash from a payload perspective but the Titan XD may 'feel' more stable towing due to the heft of the vehicle.

Reminds me of my Father In Laws 1999 F250 PSD 4x4...I believe it had less than 2,000 lbs of payload. But towing with it compared to a F150 was much different experience despite the trucks being a few hundred lbs different in payload.
