Traveling with Spare Fuel - Where to Store?

Yes the OP could build a platform above his propane tanks in the tongue of the TT. However that may add way too much weight to the tongue, and at the same time to the cargo capacity. I suspect his SUV is nearing it's cargo capacity even before adding that external gas tank.

15 gallons of gasoline weight 94.5#. Plus the weight of the tank itself, plus the weight of the metal needed to build the platform for the tank to sit on.

I'd say that was a most impractical solution.

Also notice I did not have to shout at you even once.

This gives us an extra 140 miles of range..

You could mount it above your propane tanks and possibly gravity feed it, avoiding the need for a fuel pump..

The tank I posted was designed for landscapers, to be MOUNTED on a landscape trailer and IS "legal" to haul gasoline or diesel.

Did that clear up YOUR "objections about my suggestion?

I thought I would never run out of gas. 50 years ago in high school was the last time.

But, 10 mpg and strange territory combined to prove me wrong. Luck and some friendly young folks saved my butt.

Now I carry a leak proof 5 gallon container in the bed of the TV. If I did not have the truck bed I would carry it on the outside of the TT, not inside an enclosed vehicle.

There are only two types of folks; those who have run out of gas, than those who are going to run out of gas. Okay, maybe not counting the Amish.

I built this lightweight aluminum bracket to safely carry some spare fuel on my camper's rear bumper. It is an added incentive to keep someone from tailgating. If they do anyway they might receive the Darwin award, removing themselves from the gene pool. ;)



When I was towing my camper with a gas powered car that was the only place I could put it as the tongue was full. I used it for both the car and generator, as we like to boondock in some pretty remote places.

Now that I tow with a diesel truck (with a 700+ mile range) I carry it in the bed to have spare gas for my 2 motorbikes, and generator also carried there.

I think it's funny, all the people here bragging about how they never go in remote areas where they need to carry fuel. Over in the truck camper forum, people would be bragging about just the opposite :).

Rear bumper mount to trailer. Tongue is better, which is why the propane tanks are there, but if you can't, rear of trailer.

Mount it where the support beams are welded to the bumper, never towards the outer ends. Don't block your tail lights for a good 20-30 degree angle left/right. If your water heater is in the back wall of the camper, probably want to remove gas can before firing the heater. Some points I made are obvious, I know.

Biggest down side of bumper weight is increased sway. It decreases tongue weight to trailer weight ratio and adds weight behind trailer axles, both of which increase sway. 50-60 lbs shouldn't matter much, unless you've already got a rear storage area with 200 lbs of chairs, camping junk, and food/drinks.

I don't carry extra fuel. 36-gallon tank. If I needed 5 gals once in a while, I'd go with trailer bumper. If I needed 10+ regularly, I would go with a DOT tank in camper's underbelly(not hanging down) with a proper fuel pump station.

While I like that design, keep in mind it's reducing the hitch to 7500lbs. And it looks as though it'd be impossible to swing it open without hitting the tongue jack.

As for concerns of safety back there, it's silly in my mind. And these are DOT spec cans. Only issue is color for some states. They sell several colors so you're good there.

As for needing extra fuel, well, you never need emergency supplies until you do. Just like any other emergency supplies anyone carries.
