I find if I make the tow vehicle level (as some suggest above) the ride is not as stable. If I recall mine was 5/8" down in back and "3/8" down in front for optimal perceived ride (which is within measurement error of the Chevy suggestion posted by Ron). This also reduces wear on the (more fragile) front suspension.
Read the proper setup instructions: while the basics are mentioned above there is more than meets the eye at first to getting the distribution right and best go through it fully.
Where is Autora? - horton333ExplorerI find if I make the tow vehicle level (as some suggest above) the ride is not as stable. Chevrolet specifies that your WDH should be adjusted so that 50% of the front-end rise is eliminated.
when hooking up the weight distribution how tight should i put on the torsion bar, currently i am hooking in to the fourth chain link
Or, if you have access to a scales, adjust the WDH so that you restore 50% of the load which is removed from the front axle when the TT is attached with no WD applied.
You can find the adjustment instructions on Page 9-91 of the Owner's Manual.
To increase the amount of load transfer to the front end, you can increase the amount of rearward tilt of the hitch head and/or decrease the number of chain links under tension.
For most WDHs, you should have at least 5 links under tension.
Don't worry about making the TV "level".
When you get the front end at the proper height, the rear end will take care of itself.
Ron - Hooking it to such and such chain link is meaningless, because that can vary with every combination of tow rig and trailer.
Hitch head angle, tow rig height, trailer hitch height, all combine to change which link provides the right amount of tension.
Experimentation is really the best way to figure it out, meaning trail and error to find out which link provides the best ride characteristics.
Also, the torsion bars should be parallel to the ground - rbpruExplorer III was told the objective of a WD hitch was to shift weight so the TT and TV sit level.
I left the dealer with the TTs WD hitch set at 7 links. Loaded for camping it required 8 links. I have gone to 9 links when loaded with a canoe and fishing gear.
Sitting level transfers rear end weight back to the front tires for better steering and braking. - lanerdExplorer IIDan, you need to provide a lot more info. Setting up a WD unit can be very intensive. Please tell us what you have and what you have done to get to the point of asking this question. Would really help alot.
Plus, I've noticed that you never come back on any of your questions with a follow up reply or even a simple thank you. This forum is a two way street and I'm sure those who have gone out of their way to provide you with good info, would appreciate something back from you. - downtheroadExplorerKind of hard to answer your question...but very generally, the more tension you put on the bars the more weight you transfer to the front wheels of the tow vehicle.
- myredracerExplorer IISuggest you go to the towing forum and reading the sticky on WDH hitch setup procedure. Depends on your type of hitch and a number of factors. The most important thing to do is to restore the correct amount of weight back onto the steer axle of the TV which will affect the number of links under tension. May need to adjust the hitch head angle during the setup process. Setup is usually done by measuring the before and after front fender height and for more accuracy and more info., you can go to a scale such as a CAT scale.
This is all assuming that you aren't exceeding your TV's payload rating. You may want to post TT and TV make and model info. and maybe a pic or two of your hitch setup.
