Yes pavement parking and campgrounds like a squeezed in subdivision is not my idea of going places. I go on roads least traveled for the most part but don't want to avoid great natural wonders either.

I've been rather surprised by the amount of beautiful and relatively unused resources for camping along lonely roads.

Not to mention the small town places to stop and eat. Such out of the way locations that they rely mostly on the locals business. Most are great food and friendly atmosphere.

I have a buddy with a big diesel pusher. Wants to camp with me, see and experience some of what I have told him about, but he has so much gadgetry on that motorhome that it seems things always causing problems and therefore cannot get away from civilization/ repair facilities.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park? Jemez Pueblo? Jemez Springs? Valles Caldera National Preserve? Bandelier National Monument? Aztec Ruins National Monument? The NRAO VLA (massive radio astronomy installation; free open house in October) ?

I think that Moraine Lake in B.C. has to be the most beautiful lake in the world. If you haven't you better get it on your places to see.

You said no deserts, but NOW is the time to see the south west deserts. and they are spectacular if you look. I love the areas around Red Rock Cyn State park, In California, and if you go a few miles east, it's FREE! Also Anza Borrego, and the Joshua Tree National park are perfect, as are the deserts around southern Arizona, and new Mexico. The north rim of the Grand Canyon, and the petrified forest are really nice. and the entire Colorado River drainage is superb!
Too many palces, and not enough money or time is the constraint!

We live 30 minutes south of Portland, OR. We love Oregon. We are certainly blest to be able to go to the coast or central Oregon any weekend.

For longer trips, we LOVE Utah. We also hit Montana (Glacier and family reunion) twice this summer. Spent some time in WA and ID too.

Wow all the posts so far are good, been to them all we particularly like the black hills, Custer SP, Beartooth pass is magnificent been there twice, Utah is spectacular also got to go back may be next year. Canadian rockies been there probably 10 or more times, Yellowstone 4 or 5 times, I guess I just love everywhere, we are driving camper site seeing tourists, also love the no interstates as we drive strict 55 for fuel mileage. We usually just get the map out, look for those dotted roads on the map and go drive them. My personal favorites are west, also been east all over but west has my heart.
