- buddyIamExplorerMany good things can come from personal messages. But I have decided the good does not out weight the bad.
I made the decision to not accept private messages many years ago. Things went really bad during the Bush, Gore Campaign and got worse through the ballot recount and the Iraq War 1. It was about that time that 'Around the Campfire came into being. But even that did not fix the problem. Eventually two groups split and started their own boards. One was 'Unto the Breach' a conservative members board. The other was 'Campfire Soap Box' a mainly liberal blog.
I enjoyed members from both. Some from both were very intelligent and well spoken. It ended that I was despised by some of each group because I refused exclusivity. It was a situation that became impossible to manage.
People actually were becoming members just to be able to send hate messages. Many threatening physical harm.
Some people became jealous because you choose to take one persons personal message and not theirs. You would be accused of sending personal messages so two members, could conspire to gang up on another.
I don't take personal message on any board I am a member of, because of my experiences from the past - FordloverExplorer

Buddylam, if this is a question to a specific member or post, you'll be better off responding in that thread, or sending a private message to that member. Chances are that person won't see this new thread, or recognize it's a question to him or her.
Buddy doesn't accept private messages. - buddyIamExplorerO bombero,
My brother had a 3500. So technically not a medium duty It was legally registered, and it didn't have commercial plates. I haven't asked him about if it was registered as RV or just a standard motor car. I do know he said it took a lot of arguing.
I have never seen a e 450/550 class c stop at California scales. Nor any of the provan/tiger van motor homes.
The trick to having a medium duty registered as a rv. Is to buy new and have it drop shipped to your custom utility bed manufacturer. Then also have your camper drop shipped there and permanently mounted there. You are now registering a new class C.
I appreciate the info you have given. It is the area that I am still investigating. And a area that has given me great concern. - BedlamModeratorI was able to sell my F250 independently for more than the tax I would have saved by trading it in - I bought the 5500 before the F250 sold. The following day after I drove home my 2015 5500, the new owners of my 2005 F250 checked out and bought the truck.

My insurance went up about $200/yr going from a 2005 Ford F250 to a 2015 Ram 5500 with the same coverage. I am two weight classes heavier that makes my license tags $30/yr more due to additional fees.
Don't forget that *****in 9.8% WA tax to add a little more to the bottom line cost!
I believe he is in BC so no sales tax. That is only added to the cost, if you trade in value of trade in reduces ST total.
His total wt lic fee would go up about $30, no tax added if in wa st for a 4 or 6K heavier wt tag. ALL rigs here pay wt tax at about $15 per ton, be it personal or commercial in nature.

Important "FYI" for MDTs:
(Just *some* of the "can of worms")
*Who Must Stop at Scales*
Read carefully - then....scroll down to -
"Do These Vehicles Have to Stop at Scales"
See discussion on "PICKUP".
Especially GVWR, flat bed and/or utility body!.;)
Note - there is *no* exception for towing an RV.
However, if the scales are busy - no stop may work out OK.
Out-of-state may work out OK also.....but do you look like a hot shot driver delivering a 5th to a dealer?
In CA scales are run by the CHP.

I am still not through researching but a overhead camper mounted permanently on a 5500 can be registered as a RV. I am in California. I don't know the difficulty in accomplishing that or if what I have heard is true. I do know my brother had a 3500 registered as non commercial and used it to haul a fifth wheel. Not sure if it was registered as a RV or just not commercial. I'll have to ask him. It was never used as a commercial truck. He complained about having a hard time re registering it commercial before he sold it. Not sure why.
I guess the main thing I am not certain about is if there is a difference between a RV registration and a regular non commercial registration.
It is also my understanding that if the vehicle is registered as a RV. There is no requirement for a CDL.
CALIFORNIA:
1. No such thing as "Non-Commercial" or "Private Truck".
Towing a TT or 5th won't make it either of the above.
It's a MH ("Housecar") with the permanent mounted camper.
Permanent mounted may be difficult to have accepted by the DMV.
2. NO *RV* requires a "CDL".
Yes - a *Non-Commercial Class A* DL for some.
3. For your research - make it easy on yourself!
Call Bracken Tax and License Service
1155 S. Milliken Ave. #3, Ontario, CA 91761
(909) 390-0024 - ask for Teresa
(They have done HDT to MH CA registrations)
They *will* have the info you are looking for.
Lastly - you *DO NOT* want to have an MDT with commercial plates in CA!..:(
Giant can of (commercial) worms - not to mention the outrageous cost of annual registration $$ due to the load carrying capacity!
An MDT can *NOT* be registered as a MH *without* the *permanent* mods (on the bed) to make it an RV, Toterhome, or whatever you wish to call it.
Cab size (alone) will *not* meet those req's - no matter what you put in the cab.
A Class 7 (singled) HDT - with sleeper & items to qualify as a MH - can be registered as a MH in CA.
~ - Grit_dogNavigatorBedlam, you got the ultimate camper hauler now man! Nice truck!
I saw a screamin deal on a LLY DMax Kodiak 4500 CC4x4, low miles up in AK this summer. Needed another set of wheels to deal with moving back to WA like a hole in my head, so I passed, but other than getting the camper on the flatbed, adding swing away jacks, etc, it would have been sweet to have for a hauler! - Grit_dogNavigator
