Parking pawl is to stop the automatic transmission from transferring torque to the driveshaft with engine running in neutral.
.....
Back when I was a teen, I had a job valet parking cars at a swanky restaurant with my co-worker Paul...
He was known as parking Paul. Reddog1 wrote:

An interesting post. If you did not consider it all that important, why would you even post? When most of us read a thread we don't consider important, we simply move on without comment.

Parking brake is to keep vehicle from rolling away when parked. If the hydraulic brakes completely fail I would call that an emergency that would warrant using the parking brake to bring the vehicle to a stop. - Old-BiscuitExplorer III

Wayne - Ranger_TimExplorerIn the Ford F350 it is a drum in hub/rotor system. The parts are called parking brake shoes, parking brake hardware, etc. How do I know? I just replaced all of that stuff. It is expensive, even if you DIY. Ran me around $600 for all new seals, rotors, calipers, backing plates, shoes and pads. My 2006 had a lot of rust in there!
- Old-BiscuitExplorer IIIAll of my 4 wheel vehicles have had Parking Brakes.....either foot operated pedal or hand pull operated handles
I have never relied on 'parking pawl' in auto trannies to hold.
I do have faith in leaving in gear (1st gear) on a manual tranny
Regardless of type of tranny habit (drilled into by my DAD) I automatically engage the 'parking brake' device prior to exiting the vehicle
Also find myself out of habit turning front wheel towards curb/side of road if pointing downhill and away from curb if pointing uphill old habit
My motorcycles...center stand if so equipped otherwise side stand in gear - SidecarFlipExplorer III

I see you've found the equally popular toilet paper thread, which should meet your importance standards. ;)
I have and posted an equally mundane reply... Thank you.
