Most likely in regen. It's really odd that ram doesn't have the fresh air inlets to cool the outgoing exhaust.
Not reading through all of the posts, but I'm thinking he is referring to the grass under the truck not the grass near the exhaust pipe Troy.
But talking about fords "fresh air inlets to cool the outgoing exhaust" they seem to be working out well for them! :B
Those are pics from the video I was talking about. I wish someone would post a link as it's something to see.

You're correct; the tailpipe had nothing to do with it. Just to clarify, when I said I let the truck idle for 15 minutes, it probably was not that long. I let it idle while I hitched up with my Equalizer hitch, then shut the truck off, then left it there on the grass never thinking about hurting the grass. Radiant heat from the exhaust was probably doing a number on the grass.
When I pulled away, I noticed the grass was very slightly brown in that area under the truck but at first it looked like grass that was not getting watered. Everybody's seen that condition where the grass looks a little brown in an area when the sprinklers are not hitting it. Did not occur to me the truck caused it.
Then we went away for 3 days and when we returned, the grass was practically dead in the area. The dead area was maybe 8-10 feet long and followed the path of the CTD exhaust on the passenger side. So my point is the entire length of the exhaust obviously gets very hot all the way from front to back. Live and learn! - billyray50Explorer

Think if you bother to read your owners manual (most people don't), it will caution you about parking on grass or near potentially flammable shrubs. Any catalytic regenerated exhaust is hot as well as the SCR unit under the truck. In regen, exhaust temps can exceed 1000 degrees.
Fire insurance paid up?
Thanks for the condescending, self-serving, and rude comment, and yes, I read the manual; it warns against parking in TALL grass, which can be set on fire. This was a short cut lawn. Point is, the radiant heat off these exhausts is very great.
Apologies all round guys if I wasted somebody's time. Thought
somebody might be interested.
This is a rough crowd sometimes, don't get your feelings hurt. It's just another day on the internet.

I know a guy who returned his new Tahoe because it would not stay running for more than 30 minutes while parked. The guy's dog almost died while the owner was touring a museum that was not dog friendly and the car shut itself off. He was told that GM would not allow that setting to be changed unless the owner was an emergency responder. I guess that if you want to travel with animals and leave the vehicle for any reason on a hot day you have to do it in a motorhome. That is good for the environment!
Hardly a reason to blame GM... Doesn't sound like a responsible pet owner - find out beforehand if pets are allowed. There's always kennels, doggy day care, walkers, or leaving the dog at home?
Way to twist the story. Who cares if he was Michael Vick or a nice old man with a cute pet?
I question the story though, unless the suvs are programmed different than the new pickups. You can idle a new GM pick up, or any other vehicle I've ever been in before, until it runs out of gas.
I was thinking the same thing. Unless they started it with the remote start and then didn't start by pushing the brake pedal. - Grit_dogNavigator

I've noticed the exhaust system on my truck gets super hot during regens too and radiates a ton of heat. I have no doubt that the radiating heat could kill off grass.
We have a couple tractors at work...the exhaust bolts are blue from heat, the heat shields get hot enough to burn. - Bird_FreakExplorer II

Thats true! They never make it to the road.:B
What you doing letting it idle for 15 mins :H :B
RAM doesn't have the 'cool air inlets' on exhaust tips cause most RAMS don't sit on side of road like FORDS :B - GrooverExplorer II

What matters here is that the car didn't meet his needs and the dealer had not disclosed that before the purchase. I don't know the financial details and the dealer may have made a killing on it but he lost a customer.
It sounds like you don't understand why some people have dogs. Some people enjoy the companionship and want to have the dogs with them as much as possible and are willing to provide for the dog. This man thought that he had provided for the dog and felt betrayed when he found out that GM had shortcircuited his plan with nearly disasterous consequences. He was 75 at the time and the dog was the only family that he had.
The point is that there are reasons to let your vehicle idle and I notice that IdaD had a different reason. For all we know the op could have been doing air conditioner maintenance but a bunch of self rightous people just had to jump on what he did and side track his post.
