Bad afternoon Southbound on I-95 in South Carolina

Clear, sunny, hot weather but for some reason some bad accidents plus a stretch of road work has a lot of people stuck or barely creeping along this Friday afternoon below Florence to the Georgia border. One back-up was six miles, the other we just passed was four miles (began at milepost 141).

Felt bad for the folks sitting there in the hot sun. One of those days you'd be glad to be traveling in an RV with water, food, and a bathroom.

Knock on wood - no similar delays in the other direction. We're headed northbound with another 50 or so miles to reach South of the Border for an overnight.
  • Not unusual for the SC/Georgia I guess. Seems like every time am southbound in that area there is a slowdown or stop. Never been in one 6 miles long thank goodness.

This area is by no means a metro area. For some reason folks from the North that have ever seen God's country are rubber necking and for some reason run into each other. This stretch of I-95 is bad for long waits.
More likely felons from the north and the south breaking the law by speeding and at the same time tailgating, causing an accidents. :R
    Could be:-)
  • For anyone traveling on I95, watch 511sc.org. A good alternate for most of the route is Hwy 15. If you want to experience some nice back country on a nice road, just catch Hwy 301 in Santee and take it all the way to Jacksonville or catch 321 and take it back over to I95 about 15 miles before the SC/GA state line.

Part of the problem is SC is only two lanes for most of I95 but feed on both sides by 3 lanes. Don't know why SC hasn't gotten the federal funds to widen to 3 the entire length.

  • Some drivers should have this on their bumpers: " I brake for distractions."

  • Ahh.. the joys of a Friday afternoon in any metro area.
