  • If you are not in a hurry you can drop down to I-16 to Macon and pick up US 80. US 80 will take you straight to Montgomery. I love this route because it is south of Atlanta, I also hate going trough Atlanta and this route carries you trough some beautiful country. If you can't smell the roses, why travel? Travel safe.
  • If you take the I-20 route, you will not go thru downtown Atlanta. From Columbia SC to Atlanta on I-20 then at I-285/I-20 head toward the Atlanta airport. Just past where I-285 runs under the taxiway and runway, start looking for the I-85 South exit (within a half mile of the runway. Careful here, there is one road to North, another to the AP and the third to 85 South. From there it is clear sailing, multi-lane until well away from Atlanta.
  • US 17 to I-95 South to I-16 W to US280W (exit 143). At Abbeville GA, take US129 North to Hawkinsville. At Hawkinsville, turn left on Broad Street, (129) and right on Golden Isles Parkway (129). Turn left on Commerce Street Hwy 26. Take Hwy 26 to just before I-75. On the right is Twin Oaks RV Park at Elko GA. Call ahead for reservations for a pull through. One of our favorite little parks. (478) 987-9361. This is about 5.5 hours from Charleston. When you leave the RV park, take I-75 N. to US341 north then Hwy 96 west to US80 at Geneva. Then either take US280 to I-85 or stay on US80 until it merges with I-85 into Montgomery. In Montgomery we like Capital City RV Park in Wetumpka or Gunter Hill Corps of Engineers Campground on Woodruff Lake. (east of Montgomery). I know this sounds a bit confusing but it really isn't. It's the way we always go. We have a 34' Class A towing a small pickup.
  • I have made that drive several times. As Second Chance said, I too hate the Atlanta traffic so I drop down to Savannah and take I 16. Then, around Warner Robbins or Macon I find a route south to Columbus, GA. and then cross into Alabama at Phoenix City, up to Opelika/Auburn, hit I-85 and on in to Montgomery. We live just outside of Montgomery and I prefer the route I outlined. I have taken the route through Atlanta and survived, but I come out frazzled.

We have stayed at Heritage Park in Augusta and it is fine. Heritage Park RV, Augusta, GA - 706-863-3333
  • Personally, I would prefer dropping down to Savannah and picking up I-16 rather than taking I-20 through Atlanta (did I mention that I hate driving/towing through Atlanta?). There also aren't very many good places to stay passing through Atlanta on 20 - the good places are all north of there, in my opinion, of course. We use military campgrounds in the Augusta, GA, area, but if you're not eligible for those, Heritage RV Park in Augusta is the only other place I would consider staying there. Sorry I can't help you more.
