driving and parking in Puebla

While we're in the mainland this winter we want to spend a few nights in Puebla at a hotel near the zocalo so we can wander as we wish with a nearby home base. We'll be on a two month trip driving a truck with a pop-up camper on the back. We might work out a deal with Las Americas trailer park in Cholula to leave the camper there, then take a bus to Puebla where we'll spend the weekend. Or we could drive into town and see if we can get into one of the parking garages. As I remember them, they do not have great clearance and are pretty tight getting in and out of. And the traffic in town, especially near the zocalo, concerns me as well. Since we'll be headed to the gulf coast after Puebla, however, it makes sense not to backtrack to Cholula if it's not necessary. As anyone driven a rig of any size in Puebla and/or used the parking garages?
Thanks for any insights or suggestions.

  • Rob,
It's an odd place, but in a handy location. Lots of interesting places nearby. Guess it's more secure with the electronic gate? Vamos a ver.
  • Sorry, missed your note and we have moved on. They have installed an electronic gate, which is a pain...otherwise all the same. We were the only people there.

  • Navegator,
We spent a couple of days in Cholula last year and have visited it a number of times before. Yes, the tunnels are claustrophobic and disappointing IMO. Half a dozen years ago I spent two weeks living in Puebla going to language school. I lived only about 6 blocks from the zocalo. Love the markets at El Sapo and El Parian. I want to hang out with my hubby downtown and soak it all in for a weekend. Found a hotel just a block from the square on a pedestrian street that was convent hundreds of years ago. Can't wait to stay there. And, yes, the traffic in Puebla is scary. We've decided to leave the truck in Cholula. Planned to bus to Puebla and taxi to the hotel but it looks like taxis are cheap enough we may do it the easy way.
    Thanks all for your input.
  • Traffic in Puebla can be bad and trying to find a parking place will be a night mare, leave the unit at Las Americas, and either take a bus or a taxi, there are a lot of good restaurants around the Zocalo, there is one that has the Mole Poblano that is gooood. there is also a street that has artesanias, small street the bar in the corner is a must see, I do not remember the name.

Another good place to visit is Cholula, it has the biggest pyramid in the world, most of it is underground, there is also a mural that depicts the Pulque drinkers, I do not know if they let visitors in, I have seen it and it is interesting, there are also several miles of tunnels under the pyramid maybe you car go in side.

P.S. if you are claustrophobic do not go in the tunnels they are small and hot.

  • Rob, If you're still at Las Americas, could you ask them for us what they would charge to leave a vehicle at the park and post the answer here? We wouldn't be hooked up to power or, obviously, using the bathrooms. Just want a secure place to leave the truck..
How is Las Americas this year? Last year only one side of the park was functioning.
  • We're at Las Americas right now. We took a taxi to downtown Puebla last time we were here (6 months ago) and it was just 80 pesos. We're paying 230 a night here.

  • Thanks. That's what I've been thinking. Guess I'll try and contact Las Americas and make sure they're okay with us leaving the truck and camper there for two or three nights.
  • We have driven our little Chevy Tracker in Puebla and it was very busy and tight though we eventually found a parking place. I think the truck and pop up would be really tight. Some parking areas might be OK but I doubt you'd fit in the underground or most inside lots. I think leaving it in Cholua is the best bet. You won't loose much time, getting out of Puebla to highway during the morning rush would take as much time as getting there from Las America park.
