I'm with you on this - we should keep those Commercial vehicles of the scenic roads. The only ones slower are the Motorcycles, they always cause a backup.
Sure is a Beautiful drive, you are a Lucky man. - lizzieExplorerI think I was probably sitting back there in three miles of traffic while the tractor trailer backed up so that you could enjoy this beautiful drive. Anyone have experience on US 64 from Franklin to Lake Toxaway in the North Carolina mountains?
I will be driving a 40 foot DP pulling a Jeep Liberty.
Planning this trip in mid September.
I made the drive a couple of times in my rig, It is tight, but I love to drive in the Mountains. I drive out west and people all talk about how narrow the roads are, this is the only place I have ever driven where, when I met a tractor trailer heading the other way that one of us had to back up! (Him, as I had the toad and could not back up) The TT backed up, no traffic, and we both went on our way.
This is one beautiful drive and that is the main reason we would take it. ORA has a great spot at the Lake so many others have made the trip.
BOL, - PopsExplorerFranklin to Highland is the worst segment. Do Not try that part. I did this summer in my 27' Class C. Had to crawl, 0 to 2 mpg, or stop, several times when meeting any kind of a vehicle. Since the road is not straight (it is only made up of curves with no shoulders with rocks hanging over), you WILL meet someone somewhere on it. From Franklin to the Lake you will have to pull over many times to be kind to the drivers behind you.
- HandbasketExplorerUnless it's been widened & straightened in the past 3-4 years, don't. Not that it can't be done, but you & the other motorists will not enjoy the experience. However, it was great fun in the late winter (no tourist or seasonal traffic) when I owned a Porsche 968.
Jim, "Mo' coffee!" - lizzieExplorerLeft out the "not".actually the other drivers will shower curses upon you.
- lizzieExplorerChoose an an
alternate route. This one is narrow and curvy. Real white knuckle driving and the other drivers will think kindly of you.lizzie
