Good places for Overnight btw Milford and New London CT?

We'll be heading to Cape Code this weekend. I'm good with my route (78 to 287, Tappan Zee Bridge, 95) I think. I drive in the evening and then stop at night. I usually use Cracker Barrel for overnights, but in CT, there are only 2 on my route, and one is too early to stop, and the other might be too late.....Milford CT might be too soon, and Coventry, RI might be stretching it (almost 6 hours into the trip). I'd like to have a backup option between them just in case I'm beat and can't make it more than 4-4.5 hours (or we get a late start, which often happens). I've searched through tons of rest area threads, and there is a Pilot, but it's also pretty far into the trip. There appear to be a lot of rest area threads that say it's okay to overnight there (we'd be there between midnight to 6-7am)but they aren't recent. Anyone stop in there recently? Nearby walmarts?

Thanks!

  • Just a quick follow up on our trip - ended up taking 95 both ways. The nighttime drive was no problem - honestly easier than I thought it would be , even with some light rain. We passed through Stamford and Norwalk at about 10 at night ,and fortunately traffic was light. On the way home ,we left the cape around 10 ,and passed through that area around 3 in the afternoon. We did slow ,but less than a half hours worth total ,and not the end of the world. It is def more of a pain in the daytime with traffic and such, but it wasn't awful. Thanks for the inputs!

I've strongly considered going 84 and coming down Route 9 to New London (I think 7 runs Danbury to Norwalk, so not sure that helps me), but it's over 20 miles out of the way.

Right, I meant Route 9. You'll easily make up that 20 miles in time not spent in traffic.

Enjoy the Cape. It's the best time of the year to be here.

I would do the 84 to 9 route regardless of what the traffic reports say.....best you can get going that way.....we go 84 all the way to 90 in Sturbridge ,Mass..then 90 to 495 right out to the Cape,,,15 miles farther but what a great ride...but each to his or her own
But...right next to Atlantic Oaks and on the bike trail.also is Arnolds...both a seafood rest and Ice cream shop and mini golf......please don't miss it their fish is probably the best on the Cape.....

We're doing Aces High in East Lyme CT next month. Looks like a nice place.

Where are you staying on the Cape?

I'd love to be able to talk you out of your proposed route. I-95 is a miserable road. They're still rebuilding the I-95/I-91 interchange (going on 20 years now), and I-95 from there is 2 lanes. When a truck gets into the passing lane, the whole road backs up.

Last time we came home from PA, we took I-84 to Rt 7 in CT south to New London. Much better ride.

I'm banking that nighttime helps the traffic misery on 95. I guess if I'm listening to traffic, I'll make a last minute diversion if 95 seems bad.

We're staying at Atlantic Oaks on Cape Cod. Got a lot of great reviews on here, and it backs up to the bike path, which will be nice for us with the kids.

I contemplated the casino - thought it was further off the highway, that might be a place to consider. Walmart is also a good choice....
  • Wal-Mart in Waterford, in site of 95N. Right there also is a weigh station. If looking for campground, Aces High as was recommended already in East Lyme.
