Importation of Diesel and gasoline

Reforma is reporting that the Secretary of Energy has issued permits to 32 firms allowing the importation of gas and diesel. This is being allowed under the new energy reforms. Up to today they have issued 230 permits for gasoline and 334 for diesel. I don't understand these numbers. Is a permit required for every tank that enter Mexico? Maybe someone who has the time can go to the website for the Secretary of Energy(SENER) where there are more details.

  • From all the information that I have been able to garner from different sites from the Government, all of this information is for individual industries that can import fuel with out going through PEMEX, some contracts expired in 2016 and others expire this year and 32 contract have been granted this year from what I see in the documents, unfortunately for some reason I can not post anything that I copy and paste, there is a cloud in between and a 502 message what ever that is.

They are just statistics or information about contracts and that is it, nothing to do with PEMEX or importing fuel for the general public consumption.

  • Thanks Navegator. I read it in El Imparcial but it came off the Reforma newswire. BTW: This summer the CEO of the Mexican Trucking association was travelling Canada and the USA. I think he was lobbying for NAFTA. Gave lots of speeches and met with his counterparts NOB. Some of the Canadian Trucking Magazines interviewed him and every time he was asked about pollution controls he stated that ULSD is not easily available. They are using systems from 2005.

  • MR: Moisheh,

I went to the official site and looked at the reports that you mention, those permits are issued to private companies that either use the product EG: mining, construction, maritime operations or in the case of the propane gas for redistribution and sale, most of the contracts have a December 2017 and some 2016 expiration date and some have expiration dates in 2018 and some even longer, they do not really explain what this contracts are about, so far I have been unable to access the news paper article to read what it is all about.

Excelsior News paper has nothing on this, will try tomorrow I am now going to take my beauty sleep for the night, if I find something more I will post it here.

    Que pasen buenas noches.

  • I have been told that about 55% of fuel is currently imported. I do know that starting Jan 2018 on a phased in basis by state, competitors can buy fuel from a source other than Pemex.
