Lincoln Rock State park to George,Wa

I feel funny asking this, but I have never been on the road down from Lake Chelan to US 97 and will be doing it in a 40' DP towing, coming from Winthrop where I scored a site during the blues festival and wondered what it's like. Will also be going from Lincoln Rock to George on 28 and am thinking that it'll be ok because it's probably a main farm truck route. Final question is, I'm wanting to go to Ginko state forest on the old highway from Vantage to Ellensburg and the last time I was there was in '52-'53 and so don't remember too much about the old Vantage highway up into town. So would it be better to go back and climb out of the Gorge on I-90 or head up the old highway.
  • I had no problems with Harts Pass in an Element. It's not especially steep, just a little narrow and exposed whee it rounds Dead Horse Point. It's also fun to explore backroads east of Winthrop. And Chelan Butte about that town.
  • Thanks for the good replies. Gotta go to Lake Chelan for the wife and the Ginko is for me and I'm also planning on the old highway to Cle Elum from Ellensburg for the heck of it.Also thanks for the hint on the wind farm.
Thinking about heading up to Slate Peak from Winthrop, but it'll be solo cuz I already know that the wife will not want to go up that road in a vehicle of any kind. Actually the trip up isn't bad, it's the trip down. Just want to see how the trip is in the Jeep Liberty. Hah. There's a couple of Youtube videos on doing it.
  • Down from Chelan? Do you mean the short stretch of WA150 from the town down to US97. There is a grade, but nothing worse than grades over the Cascades. 97A is a gentler approach to/from the town, but is on the wrong side of the river to Lincoln Rock.

I'll have to admit that my driving in this area has been in a car, and I've intentionally sought out the grades, like McNeil Canyon Rd from 97 to the plateau.

But from Winthrop you can stay on US97 and not climb to Chelan level. Any road along the river winds, but 97 isn't bad.

Eastmont Ave is a new bypass to the slower 28 through East Wenatchee. Though when I was there last fall, they were doing construction on Highline Dr south of Grant Rd, presumably to make the connection back onto 28 more direct.

28 is a major highway connecting Wenatchee to Quincy and I90. They've done a lot of work on it in recent years, improving intersections and scaling back rock faces. There's a nice rest stop at the top of the climb.

281 Quincy to George is state highway, even though it passes lots of fields. As for side roads, I'm more familiar with the gravel one down to Frenchmans Coulee and the dike road past the lakes, than the drive to the Gorge.

You can drive Vantage Hwy with Streetview.

One of the replies sounds like it's talking about US97 over Blewett Pass (from I90), as opposed to US97 along the river to the north. That's a bit windy, but no worse than US2.

WA152 south from Winthrop is a lower-grade state highway than any of these roads further south. It's not a bad road in any sense, it's just more rural and less traveled.
  • I think a visit to the wind farm is a must do. Their tour even takes you into a working turbine. The wind farm is at the top of hill halfway between Ellensburg and Vantage on the "old road". It's just fine for big rigs. By the way, the wind farm opens for the summer April 1.

  • I have taken this route many times with our 40'DP towing and it is a good route. Heading south from Winthrop to Lincoln Rock is pretty much all downhill or flat.

Taking 28 to George is also a good road but does have a short and a long grade, but both have a passing lane so there is no problem with fast or slow vehicles.

I also took the old road from Vantage to Ellensburg about 10 years ago with a group of cars in a club. I recall it being kind of a narrow and windy road. I recall the edge of the pavement starting to crumble in some place also. If I was going that direction with the motorhome, I would probably take I90.
  • I go to Wenatchee Confluence and Lincoln rock a lot and have stopped taking 97.. Sure, it's shorter distance, but it's windy and has some steep grades and I just grew tired of it. I now just take the extra 30 or so miles and go thru Quincy on 28 instead.. Sure, it takes longer, but it's flatter, straighter and I'm not in a hurry..

I tried 97 not too long ago, just cause I wanted to try it with the Ecoboost and it did fine, but still lots of curves and just not fun for me anymore.. :)

Can't comment on the 'old road', as I always just take 90 between Vantage/Ellensburg..

    Good luck and safe trip!

  • 97 is a fine road, you'll have no problems traveling it with your rig.
I don't think I've ever driven the entire old road between Vantage and Ellensburg although I have been in that area many times to visit the Wild Horses Wind Farm visitor center (a neat place to see and they have plenty of room for RV parking BTW).
I suspect the old road would be OK since there's so much heavy farming trucking in the area. The roads in the area all seem to be in good shape if not a bit narrow at times.
Of course you can always go via I90. It's a bit of a long slow grind up the hills from there but doable.
