- Captain_HappyExplorerI'll be leaving Pahrump in the middle of April. Heading up to Coos Bay area. Going up through Reno, Klamath Falls, Ashland, Grants Pass, and on to Coos Bay. Spending a few day there and then heading down the coast back to Pahrump. Getting things in order and then it's off to Utah for the summer again.

- garyemunsonExplorer IIWatch the weather! Snowing outside as I type. If you go thru Old Station, the Hat Creek Resort is a must stay. An old 40's style resort with an RV park added on. A fun stay.

Now I'm thinking Reno to Klamath Falls to Ashland. Heading to Florence and there's road that branches up to Reedsport at Roseburg.
Do not take 66 from Klamath Falls to Ashland unless you are comfortable
with narrow winding roads with little or no guardrails,take 140 to Medford than 5 north to 42 or 138 to the coast. You cold go north from Klamath Falls to 138 or 58 to the coast. WE are having a hard winter with lots of snow ( it's snowing as I'm writing this at the 1500' level) If you can wait a few weeks it may be better weather but this may last until May like it did back in the 50 and 60s. - cannesdoExplorer

Looks like north from here would be quite a bit shorter...but no interstate. Cut through Old Station after Reno? Connect up with I-5 at Shasta?
Yup, been there done that many times. Good ride, good roads, and light traffic.
Looks like a lot of winding and up and down and all around. Thinking an extra 1.5 hours might be worth it to cruise up there on the flats. Although I'd bypass Shasta and the pass going into Oregon if I take the Nevada route. - jmtandemExplorer II
What time of year? Now, with the weather in the Sierras anything but main roads could become a problem.
The OP identified main roads, lower passes across the mountains than IR 80 or US 50 and the roads he identified will have snow removed as soon as any other interstate. And, of course, the OP won't be in a twenty mile long snail pace going over the mountains as would be found on the interstate when snowing. Light traffic has it's benefits. The biggie is IR 5 crossing into Oregon, a main road. Any snow storm this time of year will last a day or two. Reno and Susanville have plenty of places to wait out a storm. - jmtandemExplorer IIduplicate

Although boring we take 95N to 50/117 to ALT 50 to the 80W to Reno.
We like the Coos Bay/Charleston area and here's how we get there;
Leave Reno on 395N to CA-44W to 89 to the 5N near Shasta. Then the 5N to 99 (Exit 113 toward Round Praire) to 42W to the 101. From there the 101N will take you up tp Florence and beyond. Gorgeous drive along the Pacific coast most times unless a little bit inland.
We have a couple of Reports in our Trip Journal (in Signature) going up the Oregon coast one in May 2013 starting in Reno to Trinidad, CA then up the Pacific coast from OR into WA then East and another from Reno to the OR coast in May 2015.
All good roads to travel. - korbeExplorerAnother storm coming. 395, 36, 44, 89 to I-5 may get some MORE snow.
