Peachland to Invermere and BC

Hi,

I'm going to be making a work and vacation loop this summer and will be starting and ending in Calgary. Stops need to include Invermere, and Peachland.

What is the road like from Peachland to Cranbrook? Is it better to go through Nelson? Or more interesting to do so?

I've driven the North route through Revelstoke many times--but it is years since I did the south route. Any "must see places" on such a loop?
  • Just a few more thoughts.

Visit the wolf centre about 12Km north of Golden just off Hwy1.
    Visit Fort Steele near Cranbrook.
After crossing Crowsnest why not go down to Waterton there are two NP CG's there (the townsite has full hook-ups) but you will of course need a NP pass, take a boat trip down the lake to the USA if you can tolerate the high winds here!

As Dave said try the Kettle Valley railway at Peachland it's a good steam ride but beware they only run twice a day so check out the times.

Good provincial CG just south of Balfour, Kokanee Creek. Or if you want hook-ups try Birch Grove a bit further on.

If you have time it's a good lakeside drive north and back to Kaslo to go on board the SS Moyie dry docked there.

I was just going to recommend this route. Stop along the lake for lunch at the marina.

Last time we were in Peachland, we rode the steam engine but watch out for your valuables cuz there were some hombres who held up the train, lots of gunfire before they let us continue. Kinda fun.

  • Hey, PT. Your route is a good one. You will find it is definitely not the fastest route but it is very scenic with lots to visit and photograph. If you are interested in trains I would stop at the Railway museum in Revelstoke (Lamplighter campground is a nice little park and is well run). As another poster suggested, Nelson is a really interesting town (as are Nakusp and New Denver). Fort Steele is worth an afternoon visit and I would recommend stopping at the Riverside Campground in Kimberley to take in the mining display in Kimberley (train ride underground to a replica of the now closed underground operation in Kimberley).

    Enjoy!
  • If I wasn't pressed for time, I would take 93 through Kootenay NP to Radium then down to Cranbrook with a stop at Ft. Steele. After that there several choices, all good, I would go either to Nelson or north to Kaslo, New Denver then joining up with 3 again at Castlegar then to Osoyoos, picking up my winter wine supply as I headed north. Just my thoughts.
  • Highway 3 between Cranbrook and the Okanagan is a decent road. I prefer this route when traveling to the coast.

If you want to go through Nelson you could use Highway 3A which has a free ferry across Kootenay Lake. It is a bit slower along the lake than taking Kootenay Pass between Creston and Salmo but I find Nelson is an interesting place to visit.
