Seattle, WA to San Antonio, TX in April - route suggestions?

Hi all,
We're wintering in the Pacific Northwest and will be here (work) until the beginning of April. We've just had word that we need to be in San Antonio, TX at the end of April. The two quickest routes I have looked at give a choice of going down the i84 through Salt Lake City then down i15, or across and down through Colorado and across state highways to our destination between San Antonio and Austin.

What road/weather conditions can we expect as we head south? Washington and eastern Oregon should be headed into thaw by then but what about Colorado? Is going south from Salt Lake City a better bet with weather?

Is there a better route we should consider?

Will campgounds be open in April?

Thanks for your help.
  • This is such wonderful feedback and advice! Thank you everyone. We won't travel the i5, if we can possibly avoid it. I've driven it in a car and find the idea of doing it in a 40' Class A with toad isn't the most appealing. The i90/i84/i15 and on looks the best for us so that's our tentative route, depending on weather as the time approaches.

Thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated.
  • We did that trip two winters ago to attend a funeral. We live in Tacoma area and just took I90 to I 84 and I15 Then after Salt Lake City we kind of just cut thru Utah and New Mexico eventually ending on I10. The only snow we hit was above Pendleton
Because of the nature of our trip we were focused on the destination but it was a pretty nice trip.
  • If the Colorado high country is looking like snow, try US93 through Nevada, to Vegas, then to Phoenix, El Paso, and San Antonio. We run the Nevada bit every April, seldom a problem.
  • I-84/I-80/I-25/US 87 is probably the quickest route to Texas as long as the roads are clear. April is our second snowiest month in Colorado and March is the snowiest. And April is also one of the windiest months of the year in Colorado and New Mexico.

So watch the wind as well as the snow when you check the long-range forecast before leaving the PNW, then pick the least hazardous route.

Our favored route is Seattle to Portland, east south east to Salt Lake City, south on I 15 to I 70, east to 191 and south through Moab to Monticello UT, then 491 east over to 550 out of Durango CO and southeast to Albuquerque, and east to 285 and south to whatever road you want to pick when you get to TX.
But this is good IF you have clear weather forecast for most of the route.
If a big storm is going to be moving across, from the NW out to the plains, you're better off to head south on I 5 to I 10 and turn east. :)

I live south of Albuquerque and take this route to WA a couple times a year. Watch the weather reports and travel days, wet roads freeze at night.

  • I would think about I90 east to maybe I82 to I84 to US95 south.once your out of the mountains head east from AZ. Not the most direct, but least chance of snow.
