Suggestions Cleveland,Oh to Boston

Looking at picking up our Class A in a few weeks. Hoping for good weather and thoughts on taking I 90 or I86/I88?
Thx, Don
  • I strongly suggest that you look up the tolls for NYST. DW has family in the Albany area.

If you don't have the transponder, it seems they don't want you there and therefore bill you accordingly. We have a old coach that they count as 3 axle (it isn't but the discussion is useless) and so rip us for that. The tolls for us to run the length used to be more than the cost of the fuel we burn. But, we haven't done that accounting recently. They caused the habit.

  • If weather is bad, t NYS Thruway Authority does the best job of keeping the road clear, but your coach will be white from salt or salt brine.

I took I88 from Binghamton past Oneonta (about half of it's length) this past summer (June 2017) and it was a mess. One lane road and all ripped up. Average speed was 35MPH
  • I live in Western NY and have used I86. I88 and I90 to travel to campgrounds on the East side of New York State. If convenient rest areas with bathrooms/Food/Fuel are important to you, where you don't have to worry about height considerations and tight maneuvering, take the Thruway. If having uninterrupted cell phone coverage is important to you, take the Thruway. If having help available quickly if needed is important to you, take the Thruway. If saving $25 is important to you, if long stretches of bumpy roads are ok with you (This is winter so there are numerous pot holes), If locating a fueling station you can get in to easily isn't all that important to you, take I86/I88. To me, the safety, the easy on-off for food/fuel/restrooms, 100% cell phone coverage in case of emergency and better road conditions generally speaking, are worth the money I've paid in tolls.

  • Thanks for the quick reply. We plan on spending the night at the dealer to check out everything then heading back. Will probably just stop at Wally world or truck stop to catch a few hours sleep somewhere in NY. One other question, whats the deal w/the Indian reservations and fuel stops in NY along the interstates? Appears to have considerably cheaper fuel prices since there is no Fed tax.

  • I like I-86/I-88, partly because I'm a cheapskate and partly because I think the scenery is a little nicer. Either route works fine. I-90 is a bit shorter and hence quicker. It's also not so desolate as parts of I-86 and I-88 are which may be either an advantage or a disadvantage depending on your point of view (it does mean more traffic, but not generally excessively much). In times past long parts of I-86 and I-88 were pretty rough, but they've fixed most of that up over the last several years.
  • I've never taken I86/I88-we've always done I90 (have driven that way multiple times) and other than tolls, which don't bother us, find that way fairly simple. Where do you plan on staying? There are virtually no campgrounds open that time of year.
