Syracuse NY to SoCal in April? Tornadoes?

Hello folks. This is my first post to this forum. I drive a 36 ft class A Winnebago and I am planning to cross the country in late March-early April. I am concerned about severe weather issues including tornadoes or snow squalls so I am asking for assistance in picking the best route.
I can go I81 south to I80 west to Ohio, I71 south to I70 west to Denver then I25 south to Albuquerque, then I40 to I15 in California or I81 south to I40 through Tennessee,Arkansas,Oklahoma,Texas,New Mexico etc.
I recall that April is a stormy month along the I40 corridor but is I80-I70 generally clear at that time or am I asking for trouble in Pennsylvania,Ohio and Indiana?

Thanks.
  • Thanks so very much to all you knowledgeable folks. I understand the key is flexibility, watching the weather and knowing the alternate routes to avoid weather issues. I now have a plan.
  • For the stretch I-70 west to Denver, and then I-25 south to ABQ, keep in mind that April is the snowiest month in Colorado. Not just the mountains. Some of our biggest snowfalls along the I-25 corridor have been in the March/April time frame. The good news is that, even if a big storm comes through, it melts off rather quickly and the various road crews do a good job of keeping thing open.

    Personally, I'd do the I-81 to I-40 route, but drop down I-40/I-30/I-20/I-10.
  • The best way from Syracuse if you just want to get there is I 90 to I 271 at Cleveland, OH I 71 south I270 around Columbus, OH I 70 to just east of ST Louis I 255 south to I 270 west to I 44 west just north of Oklahoma City I 35 south to I 40 west all the way to Barstow, CA then I 15 south to where ever you are going to in So Cal The weather should be good at that time of the year. Tornado season gets going about May and June. I drove those routes for a living for 35 years and have drove from NY to CA and back probably 350 times.... . There are plenty of ways to get to So Cal but that is the fastest, less Mts. way there is.
  • Using EZ pass from NY which allows my motorhome to pay only the Automobile rate My favorite route to that area is;
    I 90 W to 271 South to 71 South to Louisville, KY and then 65S to Nashville for a day or 2 stop to seethe various places.
    From Nashvile the Natchez trace to Natchez, Ms is a great ride. No commercial traffic PS campground along the way along the way.
    From Natchez you have alternatives but I take US 61 South to I 10 then across if in a hurry.
    If this route interests you I have variations to it that let me see the countryside and have interesting times;
    Examples would be a day or 2 in Ohio Amish Country the largest Amish population in the USA and the way Lancaster PA was 40 years ago. Visit an Amish Auction that last most of the day and sell Amish goods, livestock and the time of year you are going a huge Morel mushroom auction (expensive as they are sought after by large restaurants from all over) then cross the street for a buffet at an Amish restaurant where the Amish will be eating as well.
    Or instead of getting on I10 in Louisiana drop down to the beaches and camp on some of the beaches plus a couple of interesting ferry rides
  • I personally would go I81 to I40 but either way I would plan lots of time. It also windy that time of year and you may have to stay put a few days. JMO

    Just as it is today - Weather Dependent - only way to know is to watch the weather, having driven in all months and all areas, what I've learned is "If you Don't like the weather today, don't worry it's changing".

    Just plan a route you will be comfortable driving then have a back up plan.

    JMHO,
  • Anything is possible.
    Just keep an eye on the forecast and alter your route accordingly.
    Don't over look I-20 and I-10 if necessary.
