Taking a gun....worth hassle?

For those too paranoid to leave the house without a firearm (anyone who carries for defense actually), just make sure you have a good lawyer on retainer. Have their office phone, cell phone, home phone, health club phone, country club phone, and as many relatives as you can get phone numbers. You will need to get a hold of an attorney post-haste should you shoot someone. And you need to ask yourself a few questions: Can I determine what is a true threat? Am I ready for the legal repercussions? Can I emotionally handle taking another's life?

If you can't answer YES! to all three questions, then leave your firearm at home.

If a Canadian border agent asks someone entering Canada with a firearm of ANY kind why they are importing it, and the answer is self-defence, the reaction won't be much fun.

Permit good specific # of days,can't remember how many. We do know that we had expired by 5 days and we renewed in Prince Rupert at 1 am when we got off the ferry. Funny now but not then. Border patrol upset cause shot gun was loaded fine for that. What the hell use is an unloaded gun. They let us go after jacking all the shells out on the camper floor and renewal of permit.

If I were not totally versed on carrying a gun, I'd not carry it anywhere.

And there seems to be folks here that aren't.

Wow! To be that paranoid would be an awful way to live. We've never felt a need for a gun traveling everywhere, including Canada, the Yukon and Alaska. I'd hate to camp next to you.

In all the crossings we have made - (well over 100) - we have never been searched.

When we pull into the gate, I hand the agent our pass ports. answer their 20 question game, thank them and move out.

When we are carrying I hand the agent our passports, and the firearms import paperwork, they tell me to park over there and come inside, once parked and inside the agent loads the serial numbers into their computer, collects the 25 Canadian and tells me to have a nice day.

Never once Have they entered the coach.

I would leave it home. It just encourages a "more thorough search" according to the guard I spoke to about guns. Pack Bear Spray for critters large and small. It must say Bear Spray or the like. It cannot be personal defence spray. We picked ours up at Canadian Tire last summer. A little more pricey in Canada, but it was reassuring to have. It must be declared for the return trip after you've been in Alaska. I kept the reciept from our trip up, showed it at the border and all was good.
