boondocking sites in southern Utah

I am planning a trip from Phoenix AZ to Lehi Utah, and from Lehi Utah to Bernardo New Mexico. It looks like places along the southern border of Utah would be a pretty good area mileage wise to break the trip up.
I have never been this way before. We Boondock on public lands when ever possible.
I know that there are some National Forests along the route, and have even identified a couple of campgrounds that would work in a pinch.
But we prefer to be off by ourselves. We need to stake out 5 dogs that will be all amped up after traveling all day, and we like to run our generator. We don't want to disturb anyone ... So campgrounds are not our first choice.
These spots will just be for an overnite, and we will likely never need to go this way again, so if someone would like to share a good spot, you can PM me so you don't have to tell the world about it.

TIA
  • If gypsies is pointing the OP towards the Brian Head/Cedar City/Parowan area (west side of the ridge) then I would also recommend this. Maybe 90-120 mintues further but very nice area. Dunno about boondocking there, but I'd like to hear about some spots!
  • If you take AZ89A toward Jacob Lake there are many nice spots in the national forest to pull off right from the highway. Some are around MM577 to MM579.

    Leave No Trace. Thanks.

To get to I-15 north from Fredonia, AZ, Take 389 to Colorado City which becomes 59 in Utah. Or you could take 89 north from Kanab and cross over to I-15 via Hwy 20 just north of Panguitch.
  • At Ponderosa Grove your kind of limited on size, we took one of the longer sites for our rig. Don't think a full sized MH could manage any of them. From the looks of the OP's rig it'd be a tight fit. Maybe park on the road and walk in like we did to see what you think.

Wasn't free, I think it was $10 or so. But a nice quiet place that fills up late in the day.

There were a number of dirt road pull offs off the access rd to Ponderosa that folks were boondocking on. As it had poured the day before we got there we didn't try it. They were in plain sight from the road, it's a quiet road so you could again park and walk back.
  • Been a lot of years, but at one point when researching the Paria Ranger station and permits, I thought the Cottonwood Canyon Road, about 45 miles east of Kanab, looked promising. Several camping spots on side roads in the first mile or so of the road. Check Google Maps or similar for 37.105018, -111.846865 and look north on the roads. Will be hot in the summer.

Another option might be a couple of miles north of Kanab across from Hog Canyon. 37.079010, -112.538763 Closer to town and "civilization", but some trees and a stream as long as it isn't a drought.

Never stayed at either of these places, but there's plenty of public land to choose from out there.
  • There are some options. About 8 miles north of Kanab is a BLM campground called Ponderosa Grove. I've not been there so I'd check it out. Its on a place we are thinking about stopping at next fall. If that doesn't work, are you going by Panguitch? There are some campgrounds around it in the Dixie National Forest.

Heading towards New Mexico there are some BLM campgrounds but they are pretty much off the beaten track. So it depends how much traveling you want to do for privacy.

    Happy travels
