Suggestions please?

  • We are looking to do a couple of nights somewhere and sightsee DC during day. Do not want to drive longer than 30 minutes.
    Thanks

As mentioned, at Cherry Hill, the only driving will be from your campsite to the campground parking lot next to the campground Metro bus terminal... not a bad deal! :C

Also as mentioned, take the daily 4pm travel class at the campground community room, found it to be very informative.

You should be seeing a pattern hear. Stay at Cherry Hill and take the metro into DC I have taken the metro all the way to Arlington National Cemetery. There is a nice lady at the park who sells tours who will do a daily seminar on how to use the Metro for free.
You can drive into DC but you can't find parking and if you do you will most likely get towed.

  • Cherry Hill is a great place to stay if touring DC. Use the Metro. It is very convenient and will take you where you want to go. I think Cherry Hill even offers a class on how to get around DC. I would never attempt to drive in DC and search for parking. We did, however, drive to Mt Vernon but that route was not congested. I believe Cherry Hill also offers tours.
  • Just came from Cherry Hill. Tried driving into DC once. 6:30 AM took 40 minutes in to White House area. Trip back from Dulles Air and Space was 35 miles 1 hour 50 minutes at 3 PM. Rest of time we took the bus and Metro.

Stay at Cherry Hill and buy the SmarTrip card.

BTW, it's much cheaper to take the Metro. Cheapest all day parking I found was $16

  • We've stayed at Cherry Hill Park in College Park MD a couple of times. It's close to the metro and even has a bus that stops there. It is very clean and well maintained, and they have a great staff. The sites aren't the largest, but I've been to cgs with tighter sites. You're near 496, so you will hear the constant drone of traffic, but you are in an urban area.
  • Define "near" and what type of park you are looking for.

As Bumpy stated, Cherry Hill is the most convenient, with easy access to the Metro Green Line.

There are State parks within 45 minutes of DC in Maryland and Virginia too if that's your wish. I know Patapsco State Park in Ellicott City is nice and about 40 minutes north of DC, straight up route 29.
