Not correct. I lost my homestead exemption on a Florida mobile home/room extension because I'm a non-resident. I did apply for and receive a homestead provision on my home's title, as it protects property from seizure from non-payment of debts (such as credit card or liens) up to $500,000 assessed value. This is another incentive to Florida property. There are two types of homestead, the property tax discount, and the title protection. Until I live there 6 mo. or more, I only get the latter, and have 60% higher property taxes from losing the former. We only visit in the summer, because compared to San Diego, the SW Florida winters are too cold, LOL. :B

If you worked and earned $ in that other state, you might have to file.
I'll likely have to do that this year due to a late bonus check from former employer. rules vary by state, I imagine.

I changed my residence to Florida and I did talk to an attorney. In addition to what has been mentioned, I filed a "declaration of domicile" with the County Clerk. I did that to make clear where I lived so there was no question about owing state income tax to my previous state. I received a large amount of income six weeks after the change.

The attorney told me some states attempt to collect income taxes in this situation.

Just do everything like you would if you didn't own a house and were moving. Many many people own more than 1 home and many have their vacation home in a state other than were they have their primary residence. You would need to change your property with the tax office to a vacation or secondary residence and not your primary. That could affect your property taxes, it did ours when we went full-time and moved our residence/domicile from MI to S Dakota. You would then file your state taxes as a "non-resident" of the state and pay any appropriate taxes.

The Escapees RV organization has a lot of information on this subject and you do not have to be a member to look at it. It is a good organization to belong to either way. Be very careful if, like many, are doing it to avoid taxes.

FL requires that you are there 6 months to maintain domicile, but that's tough to prove. It doesn't mean you can't go to OBX for vacation for example.
No state income tax is a big number to not have to pay, and I want to live in FL anyway but with those grandkids in NC I'm not going to win that one :).
PawPaw is right, talk to a NC lawyer about that end. Looking at the map you have the perfect combo, cool summers in the hills of NC and warm winters in FL. We used to live in Wilkesboro, the summer Floridians helped the economy a lot.

We found that in addition to what you said that living in Florida you get a big break on your residence taxes with their "Homestead exemption"

We will definitely be doing it and starting the change over once we get down there next month.

We have already done a bunch of research and there is no need to talk to a lawyer. We would just like to hear from others that have done it.
