to get out of the Texas heat and humidity for a week or two in early August
NC will not accomplish this though may be a little bit nicer than Texas - but not by much.
Durango will meet your requirements.
To put it in other words, go to Durango, when it starts getting to cold, head to Maggie Valley and if you are lucky enough, it may have cooled off enough to be enjoyable. - PapPappyExplorerWe live in NC, and it's HOT in August....even up in the mountains, so I'd guess that the additional elevation and latitude of Colorado would probably be better for you.
Plus, I think (depending on what part of TX you're located), that CO would be less of a drive, and fuel is money!
Of course, if you've never been to NC, it's a great state, and we'd be glad to have your vacation dollars:) - BipeflierExplorerBeen to both several time. Colorado anytime!!!
- brireneExplorerIIRC, not that much around Maggie Valley besides the casino and the Smokies, which very well might be enough for you. Durango has more attractions within a reasonable drive, and is higher elevation, so you might escape the heat more. Either one is a nice area, though.
- Carrera_manExplorerI have never been to Durango but I have been to Maggie Valley many times. I would choose Durango. You could very well have high humidity in Maggie Valley in the summer even though the heat may not be as bad as it can be in Texas.
