Gros Ventre or Atherton Creek campground?

We'll be in the Tetons during the first half of September and want to stay near Jackson. For those of you who have stayed (or at least visited) both campgrounds, which did you prefer?

The other thing you should know about Atherton is that there are a lot of grouse in the underbrush. Very nice, except that when they "drum" during mating season they sound like a far-away motorcycle that is hard to start -- "BRUM BRUm BRum Brum brum brum" -- and they do this throughout the night. It is pretty neat, but can be noisy. The same with the geese on the lake. And the coyotes in the hills.

When you spend your life listening to the background hum of the LA freeways and the distant roar of jets on approach, all of that natural noise can be hard to get used to.

    Damn wildlife! :B

    Thanks for the comments, folks.

  • No complaints with Gros Ventre, even when full over the July 4th holiday.
  • we prefer Gros Ventre campground to Atherton because it is closer to the Park headquarters and to Jackson and has more shade.
  • Our favorite campground for the Tetons is Gros Ventre. We have also stayed a couple of times at Atherton Creek. Gros Ventre is closer to Jackson and the places of interest in the Park. Atherton Creek has the advantage of being adjacent to Slide Lake and is smaller and quieter. If you have a boat, it's nice paddling around on the lake. The road is paved as far as the entrance to Atherton Creek but the pavement between the national park boundary and the campground was in poor shape the last time we were there (June 2012). Lots of potholes. Beyond the campground the road is gravel and was smoother than the paved portion. Some nice scenery a few miles up the gravel road.

In September you May see Moose with full racks south of Gros Ventre along the river and possibly also in the campground.

  • I don't know anything about GVCG, but we stayed in Atherton Creek during the autumn and it was fantastic. It is very well-located -- an easy and short "commute" to the Tetons, except when the bison block the road. (I am not kidding.) This was the view from our campsite -- the Tetons are silhouetted against the sunset, and the clouds are reflected in the lake:
