Gulf Shores Al. things to do?

Hey all we are thinking of heading to Gulf State park this summer. While we like the beach, every day for a week is a bit much for us. So with that thought what is there to do in the area to break up the beach days. I have a 13 and 5 year old. Thanks for any help!!

  • Do not forget your bikes. Flat bike lanes and bike paths run throughout the area and are being added regularly. You can ride all the way to historic Fort Morgan (about 15 miles) then take the ferry to Dolphin Island and ride more (take plenty of water, sun screen and Gold Bond). Many options, like driving to Ft. Morgan and taking your bike across on the ferry. Just don't get caught and miss the last ferry back. It's a hundred mile ride back around the Bay.

Plenty of public accessd golf courses, if you're a golfer.

The park also has a zip line trail that runs along and crosses portions of Lake Shelby. It is privately owned and not cheap.
  • On the way west out of town towards Ft. Morgan there is a wildlife refuge with nice trails.
  • Yes on all of the above! I might add going to tour the ship Alabama in Mobile harbor, Bellingrath gardens (30 min. se of Mobile). In Foley, eat at Lamberts, home of the "throwed" rolls! Good food! When we were there we did a day trip that hugged the east side of Mobile Bay. Beautiful, with quaint little towns and lots of shopping. Have fun!
  • There are a couple of small amusement type parks the kids would enjoy. A small Zoo that is very nice. And of course a ton of places to have your favorite sea food at. Gulf state park also has a very nice pool the kids would enjoy along with the nature center located within the campground. There are miles of paved walking and bike paths within the park.
  • Lots to do in Gulf Shores and the general area. Mini golf, bumper boats, rides, go carts, Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. It’s just a 10 mile drive north to Foley where there is a train museum. The real attraction as far as I’m concerned is the million dollar “O” gauge train layout. Check online for the days they have the model trains running.

Just a few miles farther north in Summerdale is Alligator Alley and you can even feed the gators. Combine fun with education and take the family for the short drive to the end of Hwy 180 where Fort Morgan is located. You can take a self-guided tour of the Fort. You can also take a ferry ride across Mobile Bay to visit For Gaines. Both forts protected Mobile Bay during the civil war and this is where Admiral Farragut uttered the famous line, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.”

BTW, the state park has a zip line course and a swimming pool and I ditto Jim Shoe’s suggestion to visit the Naval Air Museum.
  • Check out the Naval Aviation Museum. Its about 30 miles east of Gulf shores. Its on the base at NAS Pensacola, but its open to the public and entry and parking are free.
One of the best museums I've ever visited. Lots to see and do for kids as well as adults. The Blue Angels are home based there and if they're in town, there are bleachers outside where you can watch them practice.
Several of the displays are "Hands on" for the kids. Of all ages. BTW, no guns allowed on base, but you can either leave them at the CG or they'll check them for you at the gate.
It brought back lots of memories for me, because I was stationed in Pensacola for two years.
