Hilton Head Harbor and Hilton Head to do's

Hello,

My wife and I are considering going to Hilton Head island this summer. It appears that Hilton Head Harbor is the only place for us to stay since the other campground is a motorhome only resort.

We will probably stay in an interior site and was wondering if anyone could make a recommendation on the best section to stay WITH PETS.

Also since we have never been there before are there any recommendations on things to do? We are around 60 years old so nothing like skydiving or bungee jumping which I would have done prior to bypass surgery LOL

Also what restaurants are must do's? We love seafood, American, Italian and Chinese.

Thanks in advance for your help!

What is the Harbor area It is a harbor where very very rich people park their very expensive yachts, complete with a fake light house.and what does it have to offer? Nothing unless you like very rich people who quite stuck up and very expensive stores and eateries.

It is a harbor area like most harbor areas in resort towns.
Boats of all kinds yes there are Yachts and expensive boats but there are also regular boats as well.

For the record. Boats and RV's are both for the most part for recreation and are luxuries. I don't know any poor people that own any type of boat or RV.
In case you have not heard, People in glass house should not throw stones

    When were you there?

I've been there multiple times. The last time was a year ago.
Prior to that it has been few years.
On my trip prior to last year. I went to Folly Beach and some low life smashed my rear passenger truck window and made off with some insignificant stuff.
However the smashed window certainly put a damper on my trip and took some of the lustre off of Hilton Head.
So while some are trying to put Hilton Head on a pedestal only for the rich I have proof low life's hang out there as well.;)

Now the comment about glass houses and stones make sense :(
  • We stayed at the motor coach resort on the way to Florida a couple of years ago. Every site is privately owned and equipped with nice patio furniture and concrete paver pads. The resort is garden-like and has pools and tennis etc. It was very nice, but not our kind of place.

The one thing I noticed about HHI was the lack of signs on the roads. I guess there's an ordinance that says businesses must hide there location. I needed to drive into a plaza to see what shops were there.

We took a day trip to Savannah and that was very nice. Savannah is a beautiful old city that they somehow managed to prevent developers from destroying. The river front area looks like it's from another time.

Bikes - Boats - Golf - Beach - are all options

Beach is hard and bikes work on it.

Restaurant at the Marina used to be one of the best on the Island (been awhile so can't say now) and you needed reservations.

Summer is HOT and MUGGY, so the Beach is likely the Best option - we tend to only go there in the Winter as it is Perfect, IMHO.

If summer is the time I'd suggest the second option of getting into the Mountains around Lake Toxaway - Cooler - Beautiful - Hikes - Drives - just Heaven.

    Hope this helps,
  • We’ve been there several times over the years and always stay at Hilton Head RV Resort and Marina on the North end of the island...All the sites are good (obviously some better than others), but the choice is yours...We usually go to Bluffton (about 15 min away) at least once and eat at the Apothecary for a great burger, and walk around to the local shops...for seafood, we go to the Skull Creek Boathouse (less than 10 minutes from the RVpark)...it’s always busy, much better and cheaper than Harbor Town...Beaufort is an old antebellum town about 35 minutes away with lots of shops and restaurants...we’re going down in mid June for a week and really looking forward to it...if you like good Jazz music, check out the Jazz corner...reservations include dinner and great entertainment.
  • we are going end of April into May. Both "campgrounds" are nice. The one you are staying at has a good restaurant and is at the beginning of the island. Very nice campground. You will be close enough to Savannah and Tybee Island to do day trips. I don't know if you will take your dogs with you or leave them in the camper, but there are some outside restaurants on Tybee Island that allow dogs. But not on beach. I know HHI allows dogs on some of the beaches but not sure of the time you are going. One thing you need to know HHI "hides" restaurants, banks, grocery stores so gps is needed. The island likes to keep everything very neat. I think you will enjoy it. I also think you will enjoy the campground to the point, depending on the # of days you are there, you will stay at you site and relax.
