- RiceExplorer IIIIf you're a fan of contemporary art, I highly recommend the Chinati Foundation. Then again, if you're a fan of contemporary art, you've probably already heard of it.
But it's a unique experience because of its setting. You have to take an escorted tour because it's spread out among a bunch of buildings.
I regret not visiting the Donald Judd place--maybe next time. Prada Marfa is a hoot.
I think the Marfa lights are cool, and they've never failed to show up when I'm there. The guy at the Food Shark trailer in Marfa is extremely friendly to tourists.
Since you're from Vancouver, Washington, I think a swing through the area, including Marfa, would be interesting if for no other reason than as a cultural oddity. - bob_nestorExplorer III

When traveling through West Texas, we stay overnight (or longer) outside Fort Davis. Davis Mountains State Park has FHU and is in a great location, and makes a nice springboard to see Marfa lights, Fort Davis National Historic Park, the McDonald Observatory (Star Party!) among other things. If you are into cutting edge modern art that makes absolutely no sense to most of us, then you will love Marfa.
The drive south of Marfia on US 67 to 169 all the way down to the border where it intersects 170, then west to Terlingua is very scenic although most of 169 is gravel. There are places on that road that will have you looking for John Wayne riding up on his horse. - Roy_LynneExplorer

Never hear of it. - Major_DadExplorerWhen traveling through West Texas, we stay overnight (or longer) outside Fort Davis. - 2gypsies1Explorer IIIJust like Quartzsite, AZ in January - you have to go at least once, especially if you're in the area. I wouldn't drive out of your way for Marfa. Quartzsite, yes.
- Tom_TrostelExplorerLots of artists live in Marfa and Alpine. Google Marfa Prada, Marfa Playboy, and Marfa lights.
- MYTACOExplorerI like the area...just not Marfa. We stayed one night at the Tumble Inn RV park....so far the worst RV park I've ever stayed at. Between the drunk long term resident, the unkempt area, and train noise, one night was one too many. I agree on the Lost Alaskan RV park--great place. Great hub to the parks and some great restaurants. If near Marfa, must stop to see the Prada store. It's not actually in Marfa (more to the west), but a good photo op.
- SamsonsworldExplorerI might visit Fort Davis or Alpine because they are close, and they'd be OK if you're merely passing through, but there are better places to visit in Texas imo.

PS-A little further down the road: Terlingua and its chili cookoff. - timandsusanExplorerWe really enjoy that part of Texas and have based our stay in Alpine--Lost Alaskan RV Park and visited surrounding area. If you are going to do Big Bend--then I suggest moving closer using parks down that way. Another suggestion is the McDonald Observatory of the Univ. of Texas. Check their website for star shows and viewing times. Enjoy the area.
