- TrailerTravele1ExplorerOcracoke Campground is near the wild horses on Ocracoke - they're in a fenced in area set aside so they're protected - apparently they kept getting run over when they were allowed to run truly free. There's a ranger program that's worthwhile.
I did a post on the campground on my blog here:
Ocracoke My Crabby Campsite
Also a post on fun free stuff we did while on Ocracoke - includes the wild ponies info ...

We also stayed awhile at the NPS Oregon Inlet Campground and enjoyed it. - StefoniusExplorer

Kitty Hawk RV Park is a nice low cost, low frills location. They're at milepost 4 on the bypass (route 158), and it's less than one block to the ocean. All the sites are full hookup, and the owners are friendly!
I'm also interested, but trying to find a low cost, low frills location. Are there any state park type? If there are I'd love to hear about them. Thank you - demoonExplorerOBX does have wild horses. Northern end in Corolla http://www.outerbanks.com/corolla-wild-horses.html
Also, south on Ocracoke Island. http://www.outerbanks.com/ocracoke-wild-horses.html
Not much in the way of campgrounds near Corolla. Ocracoke has a couple. - mdcampingExplorer

Are the wild horses in the Hatteras area or does one have to go north to Assateague island area to see them? And if they are in the Hatteras area, where?
And if we go north, what's the preferred campgrounds with electrict view such animals?
thanks
I'm not aware of any wild horses at the OBX
But they are at Assateague State Park in MD. Loop H has the W/E sites. Book NOW if you hope to find anything. http://www.reserveamerica.com

thanks - CampinghossExplorer IIWe have been going down to the Outer Banks for many years. Ocean Waves ranks at the top price wise as it is about half of what Camp Hatteras and KOA are. As far as dog friendly it is very dog friendly however as stated in another post they do not have a dog wash station and do not have a fenced in off leash area. Frisco Woods was full of skitters and very noisy when we stayed there.
Getting in at Ocean Waves is the only problem you will have. I suggest sending in a request for reservations NOW to see if they can accommodate you.
Each cg has its strength and weakness down there. It is up to you to decide what you like best. - loggenrockExplorerAt the recommendation of another RV.net user we chose Frisco CG in the National Seashore. Very nice location - advantage is it sits up a bit higher, catches more of the breeze, hence mosquitoes are much less of an issue. There are at least 2, possibly 3, dump stations along the National Seashore, which campers from any of the National CG's can use. All the Federal CG's are "on the water", but it is still quite a trek to get from the sites across the dunes, then across the beach to get to the water's edge. Those with walking disabilities will have a bit of an issue (experience speaking here...). That said, it is "on the list" as place we want to return! Do take bug repellent (DEET and Permethrin recommended), as there were a LOT of ticks (Lone Star) all over the area. Make sure pets have bug protection, too. Very pretty - kites recommended! ST

Dogs walk around smiling! :B
We stay at the KOA because it is more dog friendly.
How do you measure that? - OldtymeflyrExplorerWe have stayed at both Oregon Inlet and Ocracoke National Park Campgrounds, both are good. No hookups, clean, with toilets and showers. These campgrounds are in good locations, close to the ocean and interesting sites.
- dlosExplorerHatteras Sands Campground in Hatteras Village is pretty decent. Like all of them down there it's a little tight and there's no shade to be had at all. The nice thing about this CG is that it's walking distance to some shops, the sound and marina and as close as possible to the ferry over to Ocracoke.
