Ocean city MD vs. Virginia Beach

I was thinking about heading down to Virginia Beach in June but I was just recommended by a friend to check out Ocean City Maryland instead. The trip from south east Massachusetts to ocean city would definitely be better for me. My wife loves shopping and laying by the pool. We both like nice campgrounds. Any input would be appreciated.

  • Can't say much for the beaches. I am spoiled living where I live & don't use the beaches much here in Bermuda either. Do like Assateague National Seashore. We have stayed there a number of times late September. Always on the bay side. Seems like the horses hang around the CG more on that side.

Been to Castaways a few times for the bluegrass festival. It is a big resort CG. Big pool, golf carts, tiki bar, muddy beach, not much separation between sites.
  • More to do in OC and more campgrounds. The OC boardwalk is great and they have alot of nice restaurants ( Phillips Seafood,Fagers Island)and clubs like Seacrets.Plus you're close to Assateague Island. They also have campgrounds there. The National Park campground is nicer but they have no hookups. The state park has one loop with electric. Be sure to take in the ranger talks. They give you a schedule when you come into the park. They range from beach walks to campfires on the beach,to clamming demonstrations and talks on the ponies.
  • Never camped in Virginia Beach, but drove through a couple of campgrounds there to check out the possibilities. Wasn't overly impressed with any of the campgrounds, but I'm not sure that I got a representative view.

On the OTHER hand, we LOVE camping at Assateague Island! Ocean City is worth going to a couple of evenings, but there is lots of other stuff to do around there, as well!
  • For shopping, Rehoboth outlets is probably a better bet. Delaware has a state park beachside that many people like.

Our go-to place was always Assateague Island. We love the lack of crowds and wide open beaches. It is close to Berlin, MD a wonderful little town. It is just a few miles outside Ocean City so an easy trip for anything you might need or want to do.

Personally, I never liked Virginia Beach. It is extremely crowded, a lot of 'suburban sprawl,' and the beaches aren't any better. We would always pass it by in favor of North Carolina beaches.

Let's get who is in your group - OC is more for a younger crowd and can really be crowded.

We live in Maryland and we go to Rehoboth just a better Beach IMHO. Bethany which is between the two is even more family oriented, but the issue is where to stay - Indian River would be the Best choice on the water walk to the beach - just a few miles to the Delaware Beach towns - Not sure what else to tell you - we've gone every year for two weeks for the last 40 years so I guess you could say we LOVE the Place.

This is more of a question... Where does the type of sand on the beaches start changing to finer sand. I know the beach sand is not the greatest along the outer banks areas compared to further south...
  • We have been to both places, and would pick Ocean City over Virginia Beach any day. Have never really seen the attraction of Va Beach, but that's just us. There is so much to do in OC, you also have the beauty of Assateaque Island. The weather at the end of June could be hit or miss. Should be warm by then, but the ocean temps will still be cold. We have stayed at Frontiertown (more suited for kids) or Castaways (more geared towards older crowds).
  • One more question, we are traveling south for a warm sunny vacation. Is there that much difference between these two locations during the end of June.
